I've said this before, and I'm gonna KEEP saying it. The government has proposed this tax to squarely and deliberately single us smokers out -- taxes that non-smokers DO NOT pay -- under the guise of health care, specifically for children. If that's not pigeon-holing, I don't know what is. Again, like usual and always, they're only thinking in the "now". They're not thinking long-term, down the road. Their main objective is to raise these taxes for us smokers so high that they will essentially force people to conform to their own agenda, which is to get people to quit smoking. Whatever power they've apparently been appropriated with to play God in a person's private life is anybody's guess. What they're not realizing is, in their quest to tax the sh!t out of smokers in order to pay for non-smokers' alleged health care, if they succeed in achieving their objective and get everyone to stop smoking, the tax money is eventually going to dry up, too. When that happens, they're going to piss and moan that there's no revenue coming in to pay these taxes. Well, this is what they WANTED! Now you're crying again??

They're shooting themselves in the foot, and they don't even realize it.

I agree MrMusic, imagine we all just stop smoking, those companies like Phillip Morris go under, those employees lose their jobs, their insurance coverage, who will bail them out laugh I know they will then tax those who wear socks with shorts laugh

From today's paper: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/sfl-cigarette-tax-bn033109,0,591227.story

TALLAHASSEE - Two state senators say they want a proposed cigarette tax increase expanded to include all tobacco products.

It would add $1 to the cost of a pack of cigarettes and $1 per ounce to the price of other products including cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff.

The Senate Finance and Tax Committee is set to give the bill its first hearing today.

The panel's chairman, Sen. Thad Altman, R-Viera, and Sen. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, say their legislation will help pay for the Medicaid program that covers the treatment of many people who become ill from smoking and other tobacco use.

The medicaid program is also used for a variety of other ailments, this just sucks big time.

What pisses me off the most is, I have ONE vice. ONE. I don't drink, I don't do any type of drug, I don't gamble. This is the one form of self-enjoyment that I indulge in, and they're taxing the f*ck outta me so I can't even have IT.

this all reminds me of prohibition, when they outlawed, restricted and prohibited alcohol usage and possessing... makes one become a tad bit more adventurous in meeting with the supply and demand.

This should make you all really mad, I work in the Maritime Industry and once we are 2 miles offshore you can buy a carton of cigarettes from the Ship's store for $18.00.
It would make sense to tax smokers so highly if the US had a National Health Plan, but we do not.
Another example of Taxation without Representation is the IRS, their Court System is separate from any other Court in the Land and Income Taxes have been raised over 110% in a little less than 100 years.

I do see a positive in this. Hopefully, this will help less young people to start smoking. Hopefully, many people will quit smoking too.

I'm supposed to quit before July. This is an additional incentive for me.

wish you luck Winx flowerforyou Great personal decision

Smoking is a personal decision just like drinking, a choice. Taxing the crap out of it just makes me look for more lucrative ways to indeed fulfill my habit.

I need luck doing it. I'm nervous about it. I promised my child that I would quit by my birthday. My child needs me. I am feeling the cigs now. The additional cost will help me quit.

I truly hope that you and those that chose to quit much success.

I guess I am just tired of being told what I can and can't do by the government and also tired of being taxed to death while I (luckily) haven't had to benefit from any of the 'so called' programs out there, and there may not be any 'programs' when I am eligible or in need.

Leave me and my cigarettes alone, I am not only told where to smoke, where not to smoke, told to quit, etc., why tax the fast food industry, tax the snack industry, hell just leave me and my habit alone... whatcha gonna tax me for next?????

sorry just venting

Go ahead and vent, Fran.laugh flowerforyou

I'm not as upset about it as you all are. I know how cigs aren't good for people. Like I said, I'm feeling them. I know how bad it is to smoke around other people. My child has asthma and my Dad has severe COPD from smoking. They can't be around smoke.

I see both sides, Fran.flowerforyou

As for the Dems or Reps - do you realize both parties have lead and we are still in this mess... No need to point fingers at each other, lets use those same fingers and hands to dig ourselves out of this mess. jmo
