You mention: He said that it's all very interested but he thinks Buddhism is totally off the mark. I told him that I agree and feel that all religions are off the mark.

You should have said: If Buddhism had 3 billion followers or more then it probably would have been less atrocities and prostelyization in general.

I think Buddhism is much closer to the mark then your catholic friend will ever realize.

How are you spledid? Haven't seen you around here for a while.

Just stumbling along. Been blinded by a lot of fear.
How've you been?

Fear is a difficult thing to overcome. I try to find strength in anything I can, even if is just winning a stupid argument here. Sometimes the it's the little things. Just don't let it control your life and you'll manage.

Especially lately, I find that any argument I attempt to win ends up leaving me even more lost.

Sometimes you can never win an argument here, even if you have the better argument. It's like peeing into the wind. lol

Yup... Here and everywhere.

Attempting to prove any single idea anyone's brain can cling to at any given time (as being more correct) IS like peeing into the wind.

Christianity (just as an example) seems to have morphed into this judgment tool that most wishes to prove itself correct and anything else incorrect.

We do this individually... Religious or not...

Having to be right will be the death of me.

I agree with you 100% that Buddhism is a far better philosophy.

And I guess to say that's it's off the mark would depend on which brand of Buddhism you subscribe to. Some forms have become almost atheistic philosophies, whist others are quite religious and even dogmatic.

When I took the course on the "History of Buddhism" all that course truly did for me was to show me that the label "Buddhism" has as many meanings as the word "everything".

For example, Zen Buddhism is so far removed from Theravada Buddhism that does it even make any sense at all to call them both "Buddhism"?

Zen Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism are much further apart than Christianity and Islam are!

The only difference is that the Buddhists don't use this as an excuse to try to kill each other.

I think that is the main factor in my opinion. That Buddhism doesn't have such a tainted history of atrocities compared to a mediterrenean belief system. Also even if they have differences of opinion in their practices they don't go to war with each other because of it.

Why represent or follow a religion that has strong contradictions in its writings and opinions including a list of bad atrocities to go with it? To me that would only offer a troubled conscience full of uncertainities in the end.

Well what it is worth as you say there are many idealogies one can choose from that can bring inner happiness as a whole. I hope more people will choose this path as the years go by.
