The First Step

The pain of the first step
is the loneliest part of being alive
not sure which foot to put forward
or why I even need to try

We had a lifetime
to share
to laugh
to cry
and I’m still crying

The hardest part
about taking the first step
is not knowing where you’re going
somewhere
someplace
that we shared or somewhere
or someplace far from where memories exist

Please, God, tell me
how do I take that first step
when all I think about
is that we were the miracle
of growing up together
childhood sweethearts
lovers
parents
friends
grandparents
soul mates
Lord this hurts

I close my eyes too
but all I do is cry
because time is inevitable
but love is eternal
Lord this hurts so much
