My training includes to observe children. I have observed that before three years old a child has no club of consequences. He or she might go for either one. Learning experience, by the age between 3 and 4 and 5 sets the tone how a child might be reactive or proactive with challenges. However, humbly said ...the above will and only happen with little of adult intervention. You got to observe, only observe, only intervene when a child's life is in danger.
A child's imagination might trigger to run away from a dark room! But if a child builds a realistic understanding of what's in the room in the dark or bright space the child builds confidence and knowledge. Therefore, to answer your question ...the child learns to fight or flight by what each adult fosters in the mind and action of each child.
