Is it just me or are most of you skeptical of meeting people from online too? What is it about taking an hour or two of your time to meet a stranger for coffee? This can't be any different than a bar, right? Right?? If you're REAL, then let's get a conversation started! :-)

Hey, it's JUST COFFEE!

Thoughts?

I'm not really skeptical to meet off the Internet anymore, I've met quite a few over about a 2 year period or so. Nothing bad happend other then a few awkward moments. I had a couple relationships, but I am skeptical to jump into a relationship because everyone tries to sell themselves on here and it takes a few months to see who they really are. I'm not sure anyone really even intends to do that, it just sort of happens. Nobody was bad, just different and so those dates and relationships didn't work out. I kind of decided it's just best to look for friends now for that reason. Perhaps knowing someone for quite awhile first would bring a different outcome. Or maybe just new friends as that doesn't require as much compatibility.

It takes a lot longer than a few months! LOL!

Skeptical? Well, yeah, a little.

I've met 9 people from various sites (none from this one), and eight of them were absolute train wrecks. One was an arsonist, most of the others lied about who/what they were; just bad situations all the way around.

The ninth one was the best girlfriend I ever had.

So -- kind of a mixed bag.

Because of where I'm living, and certain other factors, it's not possible for me to meet anyone in person right now. So I'm more or less forced to resort to using sites like this one and others, if I want to meet someone.

As far as your idea of meeting a stranger (someone from one of these sites) for coffee, I would love something like that. Unfortunately, none of the local girls (Chicago area) on this site ever posts in the forums, and they don't reply to e-mails. I get lots of e-mails here (mainly from people I have interacted with in the forums, and a fair number from lurkers) but they are all 897,000 miles away.

Which is pretty far to go for coffee (especially since I don't actually drink coffee) -- !!

Interesting, indeed.

Mixed bag - that's a nice way of putting it! :-)

Yeah, one out of nine (.111) would get you sent down to the minors really quickly in baseball --

But that one was....spectacular....

And she lived 20 minutes away from me, and I met her totally by accident (I was only on that site trying to find someone who knew a friend of mine who had disappeared) --

So you never know....

"So you never know..."

Exactly. It's just another way to extend the network of friends.

Glad you had some luck with it!

How I see this is a first screening process. You got to ask questions in a chat and just even by the responses you can tell if someone gets offended or backs off. You can tell if someone thinks real hard before posting if it takes a long time or you see that the person writes for like 30sec and all it says is: OK.

Then you move on to a P2P phone conversation without phone numbers involved and you got a voice and it's even harder to lie or pretend.

You read my story, yes I call it that because it has been a chalanging 8 years of mariage, and you'll get a first impression. You can usually tell if someoen is full of themselfes or sincere.

I just started this so I have not met anyone, but I will give this a fair chance.

BayAreaGal: you owe me a reply grumble

I am very new here, but have been using other dating sites off and on for about 2 years. It is a bit discouraging at times. I would love to blame the internet for the fake ppl i have met, but it happens just as often with ppl i have met irl... so, that's just the way it is. I do like to meet ppl in person, as i feel the only way to really get to know someone is face to face. Thank Goodness for Starbucks! LOL!

For the ones who don't work out, I say, back in the pond you froggie you!! NEXT! laugh
