I can't believe how young they look, especially Harrison Ford! Someone told me the other day that the original Star Wars & the evil empire was based on Nazi Germany. Y'all think there's any truth to that? It's true. George Lucas is a huge history buff. Vader's helmet is based off of a German steel helmet. The Empire officer uniforms are based off of Nazi officer uniforms. And of course the name Storm Troopers.
Also, the Death Star battle sequence was based on actual footage of WWII dogfights. |

C-3PO's (aka See-Threepio aka Threepio or as Han Solo likes to call him- Goldenrod.) look was inspired by Maria, the robot from Fritz Lang's 1927 scifi film Metropolis.
Concept artist Ralph McQuarrie's original design for Threepio.
Maria from Metropolis.
C3PO, the origin of the name? C3 is the map coordinate of the Post Office(PO) in George Lucas' hometown. |

R2D2's (aka Artoo-Detoo, or as he was called in George Lucas' novel- thermocapsulary dehousing assister.) look was inspired by the robots (Huey, Duey, And Louie) from the 1972 scifi film Silent Running.
Two of the robots from Silent Running.
Origin of R2D2's name? It stands for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, Lucas sound editor on American Graffiti kept asking for R-2, D-2 while working on AG, and Lucas heard it and thought it would make a great name. |
