The Sims 3 is a big step back from The Sims Squared (2). The only thing I've seen that's arguably an improvement are the graphics - they're smoother, but to me that makes it look even more cartoony.
I've got several expansions for The Sims Squared - but I wish EA would learn how to price their expansion content more appropriately. I'll only buy The Sims Squared stuff when it's 75% off.

All-in-all, it's a fun little time-waster, though. The expansion packs do add a LOT, price notwithstanding. My bachelor Sim has got his trusty dog, a houseboat, and a Flirty nature - so basically it's my first choice for living out the fantasy life!
