There are two basic sets of Destiny beliefs: magic, and non-magic, is how I would label them.

Those which are based on a being or an unseeable force, or some other unknowable mystery to create a sort of script for us all, fit into the Magic bin. Those which are based on the idea that what happens is limited and shaped by what came before, and how the trillions of actions each entity takes, for whatever reason, cause the reality we see occur around us, are in the non-magic bin.

I am among the ones who would LIKE it to be true that "somebody up there likes me," and will make niceness happen even though I am often a fool or otherwise defective, but what I believe is true, is the second kind.

I know that my DNA set limits on me, and gave me potential abilities at the moment of my conception. Science has determined this, and all evidence confirms it. No one who doesn't have the DNA for it, ends up with brown hair, or blue eyes, or whatever physicalities they have. Two very different people eating the exact same foods, living in the exact same space, doing the exact same exercises and so on, unless they are genetic exact twins, will not end up looking the same.

Intellect is affected by the same thing, so is emotional responsiveness.

The relative power of the culture we live in limits and rewards us as well. So too the times we live in.

Because of all that, it is possible to predict our lives to some extent, and so it's easy to understand how many people can become convinced that they have a pre-ordained destiny. But I know from my studies and experiences as well, that those same people who happily go through their lives, all the time feeling at one with their imagined "destiny," can sometimes collide with a brutal surprise that overwhelms all of those factors in a moment, and leaves them bewildered, sometimes even psychologically destroyed by the contradiction between their expectations, and the reality which displaces them.

So here I am, in the non-magic bin. I know that those who still believe in magic destiny will continue all around me, and even ironically see me as a confirmation of that very magic that I don't feel.

It's all rather amusing in it's way, really.
