Trooper wowed by wooden car on Nebraska highway Published April 29, 2016 ![]() A Nebraska trooper on Thursday pulled over an odd-looking sports car -- one that could have given him a splinter if he wasn't careful. State police say the owner built the custom car out of wood, and stuck it on the frame of a 1985 Pontiac Fiero. The wood: cedar. The eco-friendly car itself is legal in Nebraska, but Trooper Bill Price said he stopped the driver because it didn't have a front license plate. Nebraska State Patrol did not identify the driver, but said the man lived in Sweden most of the time. “He keeps it in America and flies back here on vacation to visit. So he was taking it down to Galveston, Texas, to visit some friends for a week,” the trooper told the Omaha World-Herald. Price said he was blown away by the look of the car. “I was kind of shocked to be honest with you... I was like, ‘Is this car for real? Is this car wood?’ And he said ‘Yeah!’" Even the interior dashboard and steering wheel were made out of wood, the newspaper added. The trooper said he decided to let the driver off without a ticket. http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2016/04/29/trooper-pulls-over-wooden-car-on-nebraska-highway ![]() ![]() . http://m.omaha.com/news/goodnews/nebraska-trooper-shares-unusual-tale-of-pulling-over-sports-car/article_cbd431e4-0e26-11e6-8c92-8fe6a192e4b1.html?mode=jqm/ In 28 years with the Nebraska State Patrol, Trooper Bill Price said he's never encountered a car like the one he stopped Thursday afternoon. The car was completely made of wood. Yes, wood. Cedar to be exact. Price, who works out of the O’Neill, Nebraska, office, was on patrol just south of the Nebraska/South Dakota state line on Highway 281 when he saw a “weird-looking sports car” drive by. “I didn’t know it was wooden at the time,” he said. “It didn’t have a front plate so I turned around and stopped it. When I went up to it, I saw it was licensed in North Dakota. Then I realized ‘Hey, this is a wood car!’” Price said the car’s owner, whom he did not identify, built the custom, street legal automobile on the frame of a 1985 Pontiac Fiero several years ago. The owner moved to Sweden from Virginia and the car went to stay with his sister, who lives in North Dakota. “He keeps it in America and flies back here on vacation to visit. So he was taking it down to Galveston, Texas, to visit some friends for a week,” Price said. “He picked up the car and was driving through Nebraska on his way down to Galveston to see his friends. And I happened to pull him over.” Most of the car was made out of cedar wood, including the interior dash, frame, steering wheel and console, Price said. “I was kind of shocked to be honest with you,” he said. “I was like ‘Is this car for real? Is this car wood?’ And he said ‘Yeah!’ The craftsmanship is amazing.” Price did not give the driver - who retained his American citizenship and still had a valid Virginia driver’s license - a ticket. He noted that everything about the car, including the headlights, taillights, wipers and horn, were all legal and licensed. The car’s owner even allowed Price to snap a couple of pictures of the unusual ride, which were later posted to the Nebraska State Patrol's Facebook page. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” he said. |
