Costa Rica's Turrialba volcano erupted early Thursday morning, and it was caught on camera by an infrared camera owned by the The National University’s Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI).

The single explosion, which occurred at 1:19 a.m., sent a cloud of ash, gas and rock 48 km east into the capital San Jose. Wind helped the expelled material travel southeast of the crater.
Some people reported a strong smell of sulphur and falling ash in Cartago, Alajuela, Heredia and San José provinces.

Tobias Bolas International Airport was temporarily closed while staff cleared debris from the landing strip.

Experts say that while there was only one explosion, it was substantial.

"This means that there was high pressure inside the volcano," Javier Pacheo, a volcanologist with OVSICORI told Costa Rican newspaper The Tico Times.

While people used to be able to hike down Turrialba volcano into the main crater, an increase in volcanic activity starting in 2014 has prompted officials to closed Turrialbla Volcano National Park.
