The Latest: Republican Handel wins 52 percent of the vote

Election returns show that Republican Karen Handel won just over 52 percent of the vote to secure a House seat in Georgia.

Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff on Tuesday in Georgia's hotly contested House race in the Atlanta suburbs. Ossoff won nearly 48 percent of the vote.

Her victory comes after Republican special congressional election wins in Montana, Kansas and South Carolina.

Republicans are claiming momentum ahead of the 2018 midterms, but each race was much closer than expected for the four districts.

These trends leave Democrats little hope they can win a House majority next year. They will need to flip 24 GOP seats.

Democrats poured millions into the contest, hoping to tap into voter discontent with Trump to build momentum into the 2018 midterms. However, Handel defeated Ossoff by more than 5 percentage points, according to incomplete returns.

Republican Karen Handel is thanking President Donald Trump for supporting her victory in Georgia's 6th Congressional District, which keeps a key seat in the party's hands.

Trump tweeted his congratulations to Handel on her "big win," saying "we are all very proud of you."

Democrats poured millions into the contest

IMO that's the best news.
I read of a 7 to 1 spending ratio.
IMO it's heartening that a seat can't just be bought, or won, by whoever spends the most money.
Of course I'm assuming the money was judiciously spent.
