The old phrase mentioned here, "Shooting themselves in the foot" comes from the wild west-era custom of loading only 5 bullets in a six-shooter, with the pistol's hammer safely resting on the empty bullet chamber. Since the older six-shooters didn't have the modern safety shield between the hammer and the bullet, it was much safer than having the hammer resting on a live round, which could cause the very possibility of shooting one's self in the foot. A .45-caliber bullet can do a lot of damage down there.
