If Trump is innocent of collusion with Russia, what happens to the media?

With the investigation into Russia's interference in our election underway, the mainstream media have engaged in rampant speculation about President Trump's administration. Despite any evidence of collusion or an actual crime that has taken place, publications and networks have drawn comparisons to President Richard Nixon and Watergate. They have wildly and recklessly speculated about impeachment and obstruction of justice. But no one is asking the more likely question: What happens to the media if the president is innocent?

The media are already suffering from a credibility crisis. Trust in the media is at an all-time low. And according to Gallup, 55 percent of people believe the media are often inaccurate. A Harvard-Harris poll had a similar finding, showing that 65 percent of voters believe there is a lot of fake news in the mainstream media.
A new report from Harvard Kennedy School highlights the media's deeper problems.
It concluded that 80 percent of the news coverage in Trump's first 100 days was negative, never dropping below 70 percent and even reaching 90 percent at its peak. One network even devoted coverage to a story that Trump gets two scoops of ice cream and everyone else gets one, as if it was an indictment of his character.

We don't know what will come of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, but the media should tread carefully. They are already facing a credibility crisis -- sensationalized reporting without concrete facts will only further erode public trust in the media.

this last paragraph and i will also wait on Mueller to
conclude his investigation...
which i think is a good idea for all...

thanks again for the info...

I don't think much will happen honestly. People who trust/distrust media will continue to do so, just like people who trust/distrust Trump will.

all the speculative stories about Clinton persist with those who distrust her in spite of no reports of EVIDENCE of wrong doing.

Its the old conundrum. It isn't always easy to prove someone did something, but its nearly impossible to prove someone didn't. Absence of evidence, is not evidence of absence.

I'm a wait-and-see person in all cases, including this one.

One irony that often plays out in cases like this, and might well happen again, is that when the rumors in advance of an investigation turn out to be exaggerated, the result is that people who SHOULD and WOULD have been prosecuted for breaking various laws, end up getting away with their crimes precisely because they weren't as bad as what was rumored.

In fact, a lot of why some politicians leak wild stories, is that they know this, and hope to use it.

Some years back, one administration repeatedly would leak that they were planning some extreme proposal or Executive order, and when everyone got up in a frenzy over what was leaked, they would come out and calmly explain that they never had any such thing in mind, quietly followed by an announcement that they were going to do something that everyone WOULD have freaked out about, had they not been so relieved that it wasn't as bad as they feared.

We already know in this case (because they admitted it) that various members of Trump's team knowingly and unknowingly broke numerous laws by how they conducted business with various Russians. It would not surprise me at all, if the investigation fails to find actual treason, if their very real crimes get ignored entirely as a result.
