I absolutely agree with the ' tomboy' theory. I have seen it time & time again. I was raised with two sisters & a girl cousin. Two played with dolls & wanted bows in their hair & myself & one sister did not. We braided our hair & had all boy toys.
Four girls... allowed... to do & wear what want, raised in the same house. All heterosexual, got married & had at least 2 kids.
No family members panic or ran us to a shrink. By the time we were 13-15 years old... we changed.

Oh, of course it was disturbing!

The baby girls & boys in dresses I knew. I think that extended into the 1900's here in the USA (or perhaps my immigrant ancestors, who came through the White Star ship lines).
I have seen the documents & photos.
And I know it was probably much more comfortable for a toddler & maybe easier, on the mother. Most children did not make it to the age of seven. I have morbid photos of those ancestor deceased babies in gowns in caskets :-( ,

The TV show... I did not see. And would not want to (.I don't have TV reception or cable). For spiritual reasons & because I do not think any parent can make that decision for a child. Only in extreme cases of TRUE intersex children should it be considered. IMO.

Your question- Yes the PC word is now intersex, because hermaphrodite is actually vague & had been miss used throughout history, &is up to interpretation.
Intersex is complicated,.... both male & female organs must be present but... it may differ from the chromosomes , hormones & even the psychology of the individual & there sexual preference ( some do not have a preference or what we consider a desire)
IMO- only an adult can make this decision for themselves.
