Doughnut offer not sweet to some
Date published: 1/16/2009

By PAMELA GOULD

The (w)hole intent of Krispy Kreme's Inauguration Day free doughnut campaign was unclear yesterday.

But there's no way to sugar coat it: the Stafford County-based American Life League--an anti-abortion group--found the wording hard to swallow.

On Wednesday, Krispy Kreme announced the Jan. 20 doughnut giveaway under the headline: "Krispy Kreme Celebrates the Freedom of Choice on Inauguration Day."

The terms "choice" and "freedom of choice" are key ingredients in the lexicon of the abortion debate.

ALL, a Catholic grassroots group dedicated to pro-life issues, was at least willing to consider that some editor's eyes were glazed over when the company prepared its press release.

"Just an unfortunate choice of words? For the sake of our Wednesday morning doughnut runs, we hope so," ALL said yesterday in a statement of its own.

Krispy Kreme announced it was "honoring American's [sic] sense of pride and freedom of choice on Inauguration Day, by offering a free doughnut of choice to every customer on this historic day, Jan. 20."

The release added that participating stores were "making an oath to tasty goodies" and said it was a "reminder of how oh-so-sweet 'free' can be."

The Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company's spokesman could not be reached for comment yesterday, so one can only speculate on whether the campaign was merely meant to celebrate democracy and the nation's installment of its first minority-race president.

But on Election Day, it also gave away doughnuts to customers who exercised their right to vote. In a bipartisan move, its star-shaped doughnuts featured both red and blue decoration. And the local Krispy Kreme said it got no complaints, just a flood of carb-seeking customers.

Finally, ALL found the timing of this campaign distasteful--saying it "makes a mockery of a national tragedy"--since Inauguration Day falls two days before the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

I may be one of the last people in the US to have never had a Krispy Kreme donut.

Of course I never had a slurpee until I was 40. I am just not a big junk food type I guess. If I am going to eat badly I like roadhouse bar food, diners and things like chili cheese fries with Detroit style chili and real ice cream.

I might have to stop in and buy some donuts.

Any recommendations?

This is pathetic. It shows the sad fixation of the religious wrong.

Since I am pro life I just boycotted Crispy creme forever.I know this is nothing less than a public relations train wreck for Crispy creme and a very bad idea.Guess I will be going to Dunkin doughnuts from now on.

P.S.you really didn't think were were dumb enough to think freedom of choice meant anything other than abortion did you?

I am going to buy a whole ****load of Krispy Kreme donuts and send them to everyone I know.

I will maybe eat one.

thomas...please...eat lots and lots of donuts...they'll go well with your...ummm attitude...

Do we think you were dumb enough to think...not taking that bait...as sorely as I am tempted.

Here's what I think...

Krispy Kreme probably established their business all those years ago just so it could lull the American public into complacency. Then when Americans were distracted, fat and craving the sugary goodness their product they revealed their true agenda!

Abortion!

You are right thomas...it's a massive left wing conspiracy...

I like their glazed donuts. I don't care for the chocolate and sprinkles ones.

I buy them every year for my child's birthday at school.

I don't think they're going to make it about abortion in these hard times when people are spending less money.

No Lynn it's not some secret read between the lines conspiercy. It's a simple company having the balls to make a once in a lifetime statement that wants America to know where it stands on a issue nothing more. It's no different for Wal mart.People know it is run by a deeply Christian man and alot of people don't support Wal mart for that reason. Some companies never recover after pulling a stunt like that.Remember Siniad O connor? She shredded her career after ripping up a picture of the Pope.It may have been her personal opinion but no record label would touch her with a 10 foot pole after that incident.

People that I know didn't quit going to WalMart because it's run by a Christian man.

They quit going because they're Union people. People don't like how they treat the employees.

I boycotted Wal mart back in 2000 when I read that they were trying to lower the minimum wage overseas to sell things cheaper.I never shop there and never will shop there because of that reason.

I will also never fly on British airways after they told one of their employees that she couldn't wear a cross around her neck that was visible to customers. They said she would have to hide it or she would be fired. She didn't hid it and she was fired.I actually wrote a letter to the CEO of British airways and asked him why it is ok for the Indian people to wear turbans(which is a religion symbol)around their head(who work at the airport)but not ok for this woman to wear a cross.Believe it or not he wrote me back and said it was policy and blah blah.Either way I will never fly with them.

I have a long list of boycotted companies and I always tell stories to my friends similar to what I said here and because of that they also do not do business with them.Word gets around and it hits them where it counts;in the pocket book.

Actually, Sinead's career tanked here in the U.S. but she's still pretty big in the rest of the world. Apparently, this country is founded on the right to free speech, except when someone says something you don't agree with.

As for Krispy Kreme, I don't like them but I cannot imagine a company as large as Krispy Kreme being so foolish as to actually have meant this is a statement on how they stand on abortion rights. It was an unfortunate choice of words and their marketing person should probably be fired but no company in it's right mind would take a stand, for or against, such a controversial subject. JMO.

Ohh man...I forgot to drive 40 miles to get a free donut yesterday.

Guess I remain one of the few not to eat a Krispy Kreme.

I think tomorrow I will drop in there when I am in town and do some godless, immoral, liberal donut buying.

My child's birthday is next month. Everyone brings treats for the other kids that day.

I asked my child what they wanted to bring. It's going to be Krispy Kremes.

We'll save one for you, Lynann.
