John111, great post. Mind if I steal that line about hard just being a longer learning curve ... ? Not at all Kings  I know what you mean about some languages not jiving I'm fluent in French so I figured how hard is Spanish gonna be? For me it was messed up... They are 2 languages that should jive together.... Not for me tho

Funny thing is, my Dad tried teaching all three of us kids Cajun French and we didn't bother to learn - figured we'd never need to know it. Well, years later, when I was selling in the River Parishes of LA where Cajun French is spoken, it woulda come in mighty handy ... except in those communities that speak a dialect that doesn't use the letter 'R' - which means that something like 'gumbo aux herbes' becomes (pron.) 'gumbo zebs' ('gumbo z'hebes) ... It was such a bummer when college wouldn't let me take more than one linguistics course 'cuz I wasn't a 'language' major ...

I can completely understand why people have a hard time with it, especially if it's a second language. Like YOU 2,,,,us 2 we always come in 2's I am the only 1. those 1's are for keeping... NOW we could just simplify like THAT,,,,,but then people just go spastic....  Arkansas----------should be ASSS it sounds when looking,,,OR THEY should have spelled it Arkansaw......   MANY words THAT I TRY and sound out in-order to spell themproperly,,is IMPOSSIBLE to DO,,,,,IF it has SILENT LETTERS IN IT! So,,learning these skills late in my life and my sense of reasoning through life spent here,,,makes UNDERSTANDING IT,,,POINT-LESS as IT HAS NONE TO ME..

Having stayed there a month and beginning to learn the language, I can attest that Finnish was off~the~hook difficult!
I often wondered how high it placed on the difficulty scale. That was excellent info JOHNN111, TY! Sidebar: I speak excellent 'southan drawl'. When I was about 9, we went to Alabama. Could scarcely inderstand them, it was as if we'd landed on another planet ...   ... Or 3rd world country, more like. Schpooky!

No matter what language or culture I've lived w/ and attempted to blend in through the mastering of 'their tongue' ...
 ... My "Ya'll" pops up like a nightmare overtakin' ... It is as if entrenched, ain't goin' nowhere any time soon or late ... I've always ruminated that had I been a spy during the coldwar, planted deep in Germany or Russia? I'd have been shot the 1st day for droppin' so many "Y'all" bombs ...
