i am a foreman in a shop and in the last three weeks i have worked 196 hours seems great right but i am on salary with no overtime. at what point do you say enough i know i know as some will say i am lucky to have a job but this is getting out of hand . i dont want to just say no i am not gonna work i do need my job . but how do i aproach the owners of this company and get them to see my point. i am an employee not a robot and not a piece of property? any advice will be helpful.

it is not un-common for salaried management to be expected to put in 60 hours per week (in my industry)... do other managers/foreman work 60 hour weeks, or are you being treated differently.. .??

I'm no expert, but if it were me I would have a talk with your boss/owner and explain your frustrations in a professional manner. You deserve to have some sort of life beyond work! Hopefully they value your work enough to give you a break and cut down your hours. Good luck! flowerforyou

Aren't there laws that say a person can only work so many hours?

i have checked and i am considered a non exempt manager and am entitled to overtime . but to add the the problem one of the owners is my brother in law .

understood. This is a touchy situation... first thing, is that you cannot make them see your point - they will have to do that for themselves.

If your management is approachable - you may want to discuss it, but I would suggest no ultimatums or speaking of leaving. Try to find a way to describe the situation - while still being "pro company". If you threaten to leave, they may make the choice for you.

I am un-sure if some underlying issue is at hand or not... but communicating your concerns in a way that is positive may yield the best results.

Perhaps consider taking the approach of asking if they can provide insight into how long this situation is forseen to continue (i.e. is this a temporary glut in workload?)...

If you are the "goto" guy in your shop, this is both a blessing and a curse... Alternatively, management may be trying to get work done without hiring...

Basically, it's almost a no win for you... if you continue without saying anytyhing - you work lots of hours, but if you do say something you may be labelled as "dis-loyal".

I wish you the best of luck...

13 hour days, if you're working 5 days a week.

The reason i take this approach is because i have a construction company and since the banks quit loanig money it has hit us hard and we went from 38 employes to 4 and that is because everyone was making top wadges and for what little work is left it is super hard to get work cause the rest of the g/c that did not go under they are hungry so when the hour cut back some good employes left to find that there just is not any work some are back now and carry a little different attitude they all new i was losin my arse for as long as i could

Let the owners know you understand times are tough, however you are not going to be some kind of hero by not collecting overtime.
Otherwise they will continue to expect you to keep doing it without the overtime pay.

Be aware that there's probably 100 people willing to work your hours for your pay, so be sure to think this through before you go into the bosses office and throw a hissy-fit.
