Friend broke up with her fiance and wanted to know what to do with the engagement ring.

My understanding is that it goes back to him, though if they were married, she'd get to keep it.

Emotional attachment/memories aside, she wants to keep the ring, as she likes the style. Is it okay for her to buy it from him, for what he paid for it?

If they can't be adults and come to some reasonable decision, it would be best for one of them to just forget about it, just for the sake of NO drama...

Charge it to the game, and move on...

Check with the state. In most states, an engagement ring is in anticipation of a marriage and if broken, then it goes back to the person that bought it.

Sort of like a deposit on something

Yes. But if she wants to buy it from him wouldn't that become a whole other situation? She's not keeping up but wants to pay him what he paid for it.

then that is a whole other transaction (contract)

Tell her to be sure to get a receipt from him though so he can't come back later and say she didn't pay for it

She broke it off, she either gives it back or pays it off if she wants it

Oh good point about the receipt! Will pass that on to her.

Mutual breakup. He got a job in another state and she wasn't wanting to move. No major fights or anything even with regards to the ring. But she likes it and is willing to pay for it.

Why would a woman want to keep/buy a ring from a failed relationship?

Does she plan to use it in her next one, or use it to ward off pick up artists in bars?

Give the ring back and go out and buy yourself something nice.

Any jewelry is worth less than half pawned than what you paid for it retail.

Motown, I have no idea. They were a very benign couple, bland and comfortable, no drama to hang over the relationship. She likes the ring, hasn't found anything similar in style. Shrugs.

I agree! personally, I would not want to keep the ring. To each their own though. I also would not want a used engagement/wedding ring. ohwell

I would think the guy would be thrilled to have her buy it from him. Otherwise he's stuck with
the ring and out the money.

i think she should take out the diamond, replace it with a cubic zirconia, and return it.

seriously, what's he gonna do with it after? give it to the next girl he proposes to? that's pretty tacky.

Actually .. that's EXACTLY what my ex did with his former fiancee's ring .. and gave it to me.

Sigh.

No wonder he's an ex eh?

If it was given for Valentine's, Christmas or a birthday to get engaged then it's considered a gift and hers. Any other time it's supposed to be given back b/c they did not go through with the "contract" pers se....
