It started last month when I couldn't get the truck passed for smog, gave someone some money to get me parts and they abscounded with the $ My laptop, which have literally never used but bought new 5 years ago , was stolem from work. I had bought it in and was taking it home that night and my 81 year old co-boss asked if it had spider solitaire. Sure. A week later it's gone. The day I discovered that, my desktop took a tailspin. spock
Last night, doing the laundry, the microwave was on. The dryer was going (it's one of those old stackables- very old) (mustard yellow old). But I digress. I was in the frig then out. A minute later went in and noticed the light out.
Hmmm. Went to use microwave and ! not working! Same wall as frig, w/d, coffee pot. north. Washer dryer work but different line- 225?
Go out and check fuse box, flip all twice. Nothing. One is loose, but not a main and have no idea what it is.
Today, realized the other wall sockets are out on the east wall. The light over the sink works on said wall and said wall is only 10 ft long. Dish disposal also works, just not 2 walls of sockets. I have the refigerator plugged into the otherside of n. wall where computer is but don't like that idea.
PLEASE any input on what is wrong...would be more than greatly approeciated. I even crochet you a washcloth (thats about as far as I can go, or a really long scarf... )
btw...my 8 year old cell phone sim card also died today.
Also...Any one know a anything about getting this whammy off of me. ohwell ?

Could be a bad breaker. Could be a critter chewed through a wire someplace. Only thing to do is call an electrician or start tracing things back and find out where the open circuit is.

Sorry to hear you are having a bad run of luck. But hey like Seak says things can only get better from here on in right?

lol, thanks you guys for the advice plus warm words.
It actually turned out to be one of the sockets, there was plug in multi-socket thing over it and that went, blowing the others and frying my micorwave..

Oh darlin! Sorry about the poopy Juju! I will work up a Santaria HooDoo happiwhammi for ya! I will sacrifice some rotisserie chicken and rum but it will help a lot if you get naked. (I didn't make the rules for VooDoo)

Glad things look like they are mellowing a bit. Now it looks like time to take a bat to a couple people.

I was a third generation electrician for 8 years.

Possibilities:

1) Overloaded circuit.

The outlets are all on the same circuit. Fridge requires 7 times it's normal power when the compressor first starts up. It should be on its own circuit. Microwave also should have its own circuit since when it is on, it draws most of the power on a 15 amp circuit. Same thing with a coffee maker and toaster. If they are plugged into the same circuit they should only be used one at a time.

2) Tripped GFCI

Kitchen outlets are often GFCI. They are required by National Electric Code anywhere within 6 feet of a sink or any other source of water. They have two buttons if the built into the outlet. A breaker has one button. Reset breaker.

3) Tripped or improperly reset breaker.

Sometimes a tripped breaker can look and feel as if it is 'on'. Pull the handle all the way off then push all the way on. If it doesn't click or stay, then there is another problem.

4) Loose neutral

These are the white wires. Without a good netural, electricity cannot flow properly. In the panel, there is a bar lined with screws. Make sure all these screws are tight. Make sure the lug/screw for the Service cable is tight. If that doesn't fix the problem, then check individual outlets for a loose wire, be it the black or the white. Sometimes a loose wire in on an outlet means the outlet needs to be replaced.

If you have problems with your dryer as well as kithcen outlets, this is usually the most likely cause. If not, check below.

5) Possibly a bad breaker....maybe the main.

This should be checked by an electrician. It is very dangerous for anyone not trained. You can easily be killed, blinded, or even start a fire. In fact, any work in panel should be done by a licensed electrician.

6) Service (Meter Box, cables)

Check for signs of corrosion, or wear in the outer jacket of the main cable. If any, the service needs replacing. The inside panel box should also be checked for corrosion or water damage. If replacement of service is required, you need a licensed electrician BY LAW. This will need to be inspected upon completion (outside service).

7) If none of the above, the problem may be in the wires from the utility company. Call an electrician to check it out. If he cannot find a problem, he may notify the utility company for you.

There are other possibilities, but these are the most common ones. Electricity is nothing to mess with. I know....I've been paralyzed by it until outside circumstances forced me to break contact. I should have died. Instead, I never had a burn to show for it. It takes 1/100th the power drawn by a 60 watt bulb to kill a human. I had about 40 times more power than a 60 watt bulb flowing through me right past my heart. I'm lucky. And that was BEFORE I became an electrician.

Good luck.
