I bet this will be as much fun Oneiric Ocelot.happy

It seems like Ubuntu is topping Oneric Ocelot at kernel 3.1. Precise Pangolin starts off at kernel 3.2. unless you go PPA. But the PPA kernel 3.2 unless you do the whole thing is broken. Which makes since Pangolin is at the alpha stage. Duh.slaphead rofl

Lubuntu Pangolin is using LDM instead of LXDM which Ocelot has. Natty had LXDE. Lubuntu is now a derivative of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is calling it one of their light weight derivatives since Xubuntu uses XFCE which is another one of their Light weight derivatives. Of course, Lubuntu is using some of XFCE in the Ocelot.

Lubuntu Addicted and lovin' it.happy

I am mainlining Lubuntu thanks to Xorg-edgers. The top stable kernel is 3.1.4. I found a page showing how to get from 3.0.0.13 since I did the Debian install instead of the normal Ubuntu install which topped at 3.0.0.12. The Debian install update to 3.0.0.14. Downloading the alpha 1 I found that Pangolin started at 3.2. The PPA at Xorg-edgers instead let me do the Linux 3.2.0-3.7. It let me update the Nvidia driver from 280.13 to 290.10. I am still on Ocelot.

Going ahead and running the Alpha 1 stabilized the Xorg-Edger. The edger kernel at 3.2.0-3.7 is more unstable and the alpha at 3.2.0-3 is more stabler. The only thing that was qwirky was the program Postler which is an email program.

The upgrade to the Alpha with the Debian installer has let me bypass the usual Alpha experience with breakdowns. I got the Ubuntu login, The Lubuntu desktop, The fresh X crack of UbuntuUpdates which is bleeding edge and The stability of Debian. It is the best of all four worlds. Precise Pangolin is really cool.happy

It was nice to get the Linux image and header at 3.2.0-3-9 this morning. The pages were slow in opening on Mingle till this morning.

The mainline kernel is getting more stable. I just got the headers and image for 3.2.0-5.11 and my speed is noticeable better on Mingle.

Kernel 3.2.0-7 is working great now. Its Alpha 1 and it gives the option now to run Gnome 3, Classic Gnome, Lubuntu with LDM or regular Ubuntu. The mainline kernel has a lot of bugs worked out now but there are still some.

I hadn't used stock ubuntu in many years (prefering debian or mint), but I recently hosed my MBR and an ubuntu CD was all I had handy to fix it. I went ahead and installed it, and I like it.

I used 10.4.

Its really well put together. It properly configured hardware that mint didn't. Unity is annoying, but its not terrible and i think the people who love apple will like unity. its not for me personally, but i see the value in what they are doing.

Also, unity isn't that bad when you can always just launch an xterm and do everything from there.

Debian and Mint are both excellent Distros. The Lubuntu I am using is from the alternate Debian installer CD. I was curious what the Multi-arch support was all about. It lets you log out to the different variations. Mint Lisa is cool as you have the choice of old Gnome or Gnome 3. But I like about the Precise Pangolin 12.04 is that it is a light Gnome as LXDE. It is like it went from LXDE to LXDM to LDM. I actually think the Gnome in Precise is the same Gnome in Lisa. When you are running the alternate Debian installer it is like running Debian only its Lubuntu. The difference being it is like a fast Debian loader with the packages and the Nvidia graphics installation because it is also Ubuntu. It is just amazing.

Actually one of the Gnome looks just like Ubuntu 10.4 only a heck of a lot lighter. One can even run just Openbox but it looks kind of flaky but runs great. I really like the Debian Squeeze desktop wallpaper on top of the light Gnome. I find myself more on the light Gnome than the actual Lubuntu looking desktop because of the Xscreensaver. With the Gnome 3 you just got on or off toggles. Which is cool if you are watching something on Streamtuner2 or playing tunes on regular Streamtuner. Couldn't get the Gnome Power Manager to work like I wanted on the Lubuntu with LDM. One would have to jiggle the mouse to keep the screen blanking or going out which was really aggravating. So what you have actually is different desktops you can log in and out of. I think that is cool because I find myself less Distro hopping.laugh

Yeah. Unity came in in 11.04. What a disappointment it was for Gnome lovers. But they have really worked on it. MSGE in Mint really tamed that Unity beast. I came into Ubuntu with 7.04 and Mint with 4. Loved Debian with Lenny 5. Never got to experience Debian Sarge. Debian Wheezy is coming along fine. I just got tired of waiting for Mint Lisa LXDE. I am sure Clem is working on it. Mint Julia LXDE is still awesome but I wanted the higher kernel. Since I run two monitors regular Debian LXDE Squeeze 6 was a drag unless you want the same picture on both screens. It is nice to have the LX terminal on all the desktops like they were in Debian Squeeze 6 LXDE. When Lubuntu became part of Ubuntu OpenSUSE and Arch really brought some good stuff to the Distro because of the Multi-Arch support.

The surprising part is how Debian with its stability is affecting the Alpha. I mean Alphas by nature are suppose be a lot more breakable but Debian is taming the Alpha.

Clem said that the difference in Ubuntu and Mint is the automatic upgrade effect. Mint doesn't automatically upgrade like Ubuntu does. Mint was a Distro by itself in Mint 4 and joined onto Ubuntu with the Ubuntu repositories. Actually Debian sees Mint as LinuxMint. That came with LMDE or Linux Mint Debian Edition. Pretty cool Distro the only problem being it has to have a root like Mepis or Fedora or Debian or Funduntu. So many derivatives like that. A lot people went to Mint with the Unity thing when Ubuntu 11.04 came out.

I am using Ubuntu 11.1 I am learning the beauty of Unity which is interesting. I studying CLI code as that is where all the power in Linux is. I was taught that. It is much like DOS. If you can work that command prompt, you can do anything you want. It's got the potential for the most good and evil. LOL. Like reformat c: was in DOS. I only got to use that command a few times. I worked on some secretive stuff in the olden days and had a computer that could have been used for bad things because it had too much enough. that was so fun. when i was done with my job, i reformatted that hard drive over and over again to make it a biotch to recover data. It was a very satisfying feeling like blowing something up.

Oh my. That is fun. I once put the Windows in the recycle bin and inverted all. It never recovered.laugh What is really fun is the low format where it makes the hard drive all zeroes like the hard drive came from the manufacturer. You would like Parted Magic. I have played with gparted a lot.

There is a beauty of Unity for lab tops and they are making it better for desktops, too.
