I was having a chat with a police officer. He said to me that for kids to have a safe, stable, warm home was not the norm anymore. Do you think society has lost the plot because the past few generations do not attend church anymore?

yep! we all need a sense of right and wrong - without the church, its all relative.... the new world version of Sodom and Gomorrah!

I asked my teenage daughter if this was true of her friends. She told me that it is true that one third of her friends come from an unstable home. I just cant get it out of my head. It is tragic!

Breakdown of church going. "The family that prays together stays together." My kids grew up without a mom, but it was still stable, just missing an essential element. Fortunately they turned out okay to me.

There are many bad influences. The State has taken over as parents. Rap music teaches violence. Movies and media teach "political correctness" and much of what is PC goes against traditional values.

Public schools in many areas ...whoa

I dont think its exclusive to church. I think the family unit has been dissolved by the 'me' culture. Technology has caused a culture where people need to be constantly plugged into something as opposed to being present with the people who love them. The down side of Womens Lib mixed with our patriarchal culture has lead to the expectation for women to be doing it all, which means there is no consistent parent to count on at home anymore. Marriage has become much less serious or well thought out and divorce too rampant. Families are split in so many directions, kids barely have a solid base/foundation anymore. Parents are now both working and the media and technology have become our kids families far too often. And unfortunately, the media and technology do a GREAT job at promoting the worst possible manners and values and behavior.

I think its a combination of a Loss of God,the cultural trend of rejecting ANY forms of authority or rules, the dissolving of family units, The overabundance of technology and media influences, and the expectaton of instant gratficaton and self centeredness that has come from it.

all genres of music have violent songs amongst them, rap and rock and pop are just two of the more popular genres right now

and movies and media teach plenty of violence and promiscuity too

we are desensitized to life because of the combination of LOSING physical human real time connections (losing them to technology and cyber worlds and automation) and being bombarded with images in music, movies, and television that make human life seem so expendable and replacable,,,,

MsHarmony you have such a level head, are very perceptive and have the courage to stand by what you believe. Thank you for your posts. I feel I have a better understanding now, although I dont enjoy understanding the breakdown of family. flowerforyou

What most fail to realize is that society remains unchanged...We just have more people now.

Oh, by the way...I converted to Christianity a few weeks ago, baptized and everything.

thats cool, I think society is interchanged with culture in conversation

and culture is CONSTANTLY changing

our culture in america has changed from one of service orientation (Service to family, community, country)

into one of instant gratification and self centered world view where all that matters is 'me' and my wants

its not the number of people so much as it is the advent of technology and how it has changed how people view and interact with and about each other and how they value/devalue human life in general

I politely disagree...But I've worked for the media before as a writer. We have more access to things we didn't have before, I do agree that technology has changed how people view and interact with each other, but I don't agree that it has changed people. Humanity has been selfish since its onset, much of history is plagued by these stories of selfish indignation and personal gains ahead of public gains.

I wrote something recently about how I was mesmerized by humanity, with so much ability to do great things for everyone it constantly stunts that with blood-blind rage and the hope to conquer. All that said though, we are not more selfish today than we were before, there is just more selfish people today than before and we get to see them all on the nightly news.

universally , I think the types of people have not changed

geographically and culturally, I think the TRENDS in morals and behavior have

I think we stigmatized alot more before technology, and communities were closer in terms of familiarity with each other, reputation, etc,,,

just as examples,

men would have been much more ashamed about living off of women or abandoning their children, women would have been much more ashamed about jumping from bed to bed, children would have felt ashamed to be known as disrespectful or lazy, people would be ashamed to use vulgarity around children or the elderly

which curbed alot of 'questionable' or immoral behavior

on the flip side, white men were made to feel a little more ashamed about belittling women or enslaving minorities, lynching and blatant vocal sexism/racism also became more shameful

I think technology has opened up more people to an abundance of messages about 'subjective' morality and stigmatized the very notion of 'shame' for anything unless it causes immediate and obvious harm to a person or conflicts in any way with the constitution,,,

so that 'anything goes' type of boundariless 'freedom' is much more the expectation in american culture than it ever was before,,,

I do however, likewise find it amazing, that IN SPITE of the changing downward trends in our culture, there are still those with the spirit of neighborly love and charity and community
