Today a voice was put to rest,
but not silenced.

A victim of brutality,
of rape,
of bigotry,
of injustice.

A victim of
unequal opportunity,
of suffrage,
of hate
assigned to her by the
pigment of her own
skin.

She was a
prostitute
a survivor
a mother
an activist
an educator
a poet.

Her trials are over now;
The verdict?
Guilty!

Guilty of
spinning syllables
into phrases that
bite.
Guilty of combining phrases
into poems that matter.
Works that enlighten,
explain,
entertain and
give hope.

Guilty, guilty, guilty!

She was courageous,
compassionate,
confident
and she was a
leader.

Today humanity lost a beautiful voice
and our ears will forever suffer.

And though
the caged bird sings no more,
she is at long last,
finally, free
to fly.

I had the opportunity to attend one of her readings. It was an experience that I'll cherish forever. Her voice, her words, her being was beyond imagination.

kc, very, very well done. I read this and felt your compassion for Maya. I felt your strength in this regard. And your words? Very nicely constructed line after interesting line. Maya would be proud of your individual sentiments.

Nice play, kc. smokin

Kevin, I love this. Amazing homage to a woman that we only met through her unabashed voice in naked words. We all felt like we knew her because she gave so much of herself and her story lives on.

I loved this poem but forgive my ignorance I had never heard of her. However, I have just googled and read about her on wiki, she sounds like some lady.
