Hearts connect, rings are given as symbols, nonverbal acknowledgments of a relationship's status.

Friendship ring

Promise ring

Engagement ring

Wedding ring

Regardless to who purchased the jewelry, or at what stage the commitment to be together is, when the relationship is over who gets to keep the ring?

And why?

I would return everything ABOVE the wedding ring.
The wedding ring you earn.

Everything stays with the female, in the state of Tennessee it is considered a gift to her and therefore not the mans property...

I'd keep them all and sell them off.

Might need the money for lawyer's fees.

I cannot speak for anyone else but the way I personally feel about this is if jewelry or any material object was given to the other person involved in a relationship that object was given period. It becomes the possession of the person to whom it was given. If it was personally requested that I return that object I would return it for no other reason than the true value I may have placed on that object because of what I had considered heartfelt sentiment would have been lost and therefore had become valueless despite any monetary value it may still have. JMHO

Anything you "give" somebody is a "gift" and therefore it's theirs to keep no matter what happens to the "relationship".

It is however customary to give back an engagement ring if the wedding
is called off.

Wedding rings and such? Hey, if it was the guys great grandmothers, a family heirloom of some sort, or his class ring from Harvard, be a mensch and give it back.

If it was something he picked out at the mall on his way home from work, as Soufie says, "you earned it".

Humm not sure who is suppose to or why but I keep my rings. I have rings that a ex b/f bought me I like them so I wear them..

As far as the wedding ring I sold it and bought stuff I needed at the time...

Once you give someone a gift it is theirs..

As far as a engagement ring they say if the woman breaks it off she is suppose to give the ring back...

But then I went straight for the wedding ring...

Sorry (((Athena))) flowerforyou Couldn't help myself

I say it was a gift and the person I gave the gift to keeps it.
If I give it to a man it belongs to him.

I'd let him do what he wants with his. As it was his in the first place. I'd probably keep mine, as we were once in a special relationship together, and I want to stay true to my feelings, by keeping the jewellery as a symbol of our memories of times spent together. I seriously don't think I could give such a sentimental thing away. I may sound soft saying that, but I love deep.

It doesn't mean you didn't value the object or love deeply. What it does mean is if that sentiment was lost along the way, would you willingly release it to find something or someone who would never ask you to return it! Therein lies the key.

the recipient, however, if the relationship had not progressed far after the giving, it would be nice of the recipient to return it
