just interesting food for thought,,,

edited from http://fair.org/take-action-now/media-activism-kit/how-to-detect-bias-in-news-media/

1.WHO ARE THE SOURCES? To portray issues fairly and accurately, media must broaden their spectrum of sources. Otherwise, they serve merely as megaphones for those in power

2.0IS THERE A LACK OF DIVERSITY?
How many of the experts these news outlets cite are women and people of color? FAIR's 40-month survey of Nightline found its U.S. guests to be 92 percent white and 89 percent male. A similar survey of PBS's NewsHour found its guestlist was 90 percent white and 87 percent male.

3.FROM WHOSE POINT OF VIEW IS NEWS REPORTED?
Political coverage often focuses on how issues affect politicians or corporate executives rather than those directly affected by the issue.

Economics coverage usually looks at how events impact stockholders rather than workers or consumers.

Demand that those affected by the issue have a voice in coverage

4. ARE THERE DOUBLE STANDARDS?

Youth of color who commit crimes are referred to as "superpredators," whereas adult criminals who commit white-collar crimes are often portrayed as having been tragically been led astray. Think tanks partly funded by unions are often identified as "labor-backed" while think tanks heavily funded by business interests are usually not identified as "corporate-backed."

5. DO STEREOTYPES SKEW COVERAGE?

Does coverage of the drug crisis focus almost exclusively on African Americans, despite the fact that the vast majority of drug users are white? Does coverage of women on welfare focus overwhelmingly on African-American women, despite the fact that the majority of welfare recipients are not black? Are lesbians portrayed as "man-hating" and gay men portrayed as "sexual predators" (even though a child is 100 times more likely to be molested by a family member than by an unrelated gay adult—Denver Post, 9/28/92)?

6. WHAT ARE THE UNCHALLENGED ASSUMPTIONS?

7. IS THE LANGUAGE LOADED?
When media adopt loaded terminology, they help shape public opinion. For instance, media often use the right-wing buzzword "racial preference" to refer to affirmative action programs. Polls show that this decision makes a huge difference in how the issue is perceived: A 1992 Louis Harris poll, for example, found that 70 percent said they favored "affirmative action" while only 46 percent favored "racial preference programs."

Demonstrate how the language chosen gives people an inaccurate impression of the issue, program or community.

8. IS THERE A LACK OF CONTEXT?

9. DO THE HEADLINES AND STORIES MATCH?
A classic case: In a New York Times article on the June 1988 U.S.-Soviet summit in Moscow, Margaret Thatcher was quoted as saying of Reagan, "Poor dear, there's nothing between his ears." The Times headline: "Thatcher Salute to the Reagan Years."

10.ARE STORIES ON IMPORTANT ISSUES FEATURED PROMINENTLY?

Since 5 out of the 6 major corporate media companies are bias liberal demoncrap owned, with Fox being the only Repulsicon leaning offering, who can expect truth in media?

Obozo messes up.... 5 won't report it, if the other does, they're racist.

Why do you think it is that people are turning away from corporate media and their ratings are going in the toilet..... other than FOX at the moment..... and that's sad.....very sad!

Fox stands with establishment Repulsicons for it's "insider" opinions....Cheney, Hayden, Rice, and any other pro Israel, warmonging, corrupt, lying politico with an (R) by their name.

The one thing they ALL share in common? ...... their support for the banks and corporations!.....the hand that feeds them!

2. IS THERE A LACK OF DIVERSITY?

How about a diversity of thought?

For example, a media outlet might regularly feature black Americans who are liberals but not feature black Americans who are conservatives.

Most of those reporting are reading edited script.

Liberal liars will satisfy their crowd.

Conservatives will attract theirs.

Demand BET provide edited news and insist they fill their racially ballanced quota.

are we talking stations that broadcast general content, or stations that are meant for broadcasting NEWS?

if we are talking the latter, I agree. If we are talking the former, I dont.

simiilarly, with news SHOWS (programs included in general programming stations), if there is distinctino made about its focus,, ie,, fishing news, or world news, or womens issues,,,,in its advertising and/or title,, I also have no problem with it not being 'diverse'

but if its touted as just a 'news' show, PERIOD, it should have diversity.

Men are better than women when it comes to most things and that includes news reading. And ethnic races are a minority in the USA. So it stands to reason that white men make up the bulk of the news room.

to the first claim,, dont be so sure

Despite the stereotype that boys do better in math and science, girls have made higher grades than boys throughout their school years for nearly a century, according to a new analysis published by the American Psychological Association.

“Although gender differences follow essentially stereotypical patterns on achievement tests in which boys typically score higher on math and science, females have the advantage on school grades regardless of the material,” said lead study author Daniel Voyer, PhD, of the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada. “School marks reflect learning in the larger social context of the classroom and require effort and persistence over long periods of time, whereas standardized tests assess basic or specialized academic abilities and aptitudes at one point in time without social influences.”

to the second claim: ethnic races are a minority, so it stands to reason white males make up the bulk of the news room

I AGREE. except for where minorities have created their own news sources,,,,

Misharmony, the reason girls are doing better than boys is because those statistics were taken from mixed schools. No doubt by a liberal. I'm quite sure all boys schools get better results than all girls schools. Reason being because girls are a distraction for boys.
