"There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print.

I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. I am to write what I am told to write. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes." John Swinton, former Chief of Staff, The New York Times.

So, someone at the NYT has extrapolated his personal gripe to be an indictment of the entire press.

By the way, reporters are supposed to report news, not give personal opinions.

i have done court watching, have sat beside the reporters several times during trials, sometimes it is hard to believe that they were at the same trial... just sensationalism, and half truths..., If you believe anything the news says besides the date, well, good luck with that.

And yet they slip there opinions in every day. subtly of course by ommission and outright disinformation. There was a time when the reporters could not release a report till they were absolutely sure of the facts. But now so desperate are they for CONTROVERSY that they completely ignore the real facts if it sells the news. Controversy sells- when the facts get in the way they are either partly omitted or phrased in such a way as to insinuate scandal. Its how our society is now. we crave it and as a result we never get the complete truth.

slant and negativity sells

its the culture, but it doesn't mean everyone abides by it, some are paid for the very opinion they have,,, because of sharing that opinion with those who pay their salaries, they are encouraged to report from that perspective

so, its more a matter of finding the employer whose perspective is in line with the opinion you wish to share,, then its all good,,,

as the saying goes

Is it's starting to become irrelevant with the growth of citizen journalism.

Not one iota of sympathy from me.

What you've posted, hasn't been "news", in well over twenty years.
'Cept, the new name announcing what many already knew.

One thing to know it, quite another to tell the world about it. Kudos to John Swinton.

There are journalists that tell the truth, write books, blog, etc. And do not think that they don't pay for their individual privacy with stresses.

And Crimea was a smear campaign?

You know, Ukraine and Russia were in one country called the USSR once? And the Crimea was Russian all along, then they just divided the borders for the convenience sake just as you would divide state borders in America. Then when the nationalist government came to power in Ukraine and started killing Russians living there, Russia took it back. Every action causes counteraction.

So this journalist clearly believes he's still in the 19th century.
Does he actually know what an employment contract is?

That's where I am always the boss of me, even if I work for you. Call it, I dunno, we're no longer serfs.

Hire me as a journalist, print what you want to print as the editor, I have no say in that, tell me what to write as a journalist however and I'm just not going to take it seriously. What are you going to do, beat me? Good luck with that. I write what I write, you print what you print, and cross that line and I'm going to put my arm around you and walk you down the street to a nice little cafe and give you a little scare.

Now keeping your job, that's about the quality of your work, don't kid yourself about it being anything else. If someone convinced you it's about sucking the employer's member, they're just scamming you into less pay for more work, they only care about the work you do. They lie about caring about anything else, including having their egos served.
