People try to control and dominate others. If you become prey to this person, you will lose your sense of self, only worried about his happiness instead of being true to yourself. This has a way of building hatred and resentment. It will end badly. Therefore, be healthy, place yourself first but also be aware of the needs of others.

Absolutely True in my belief system, I had to love myself first. In the journey of learning to love thyself you have to learn acceptance of your strengths and weaknesses. In doing that I believe a person also learns what their value as a human being is; so therefore they learn just how valuable another is.

In learning to love oneself they learn how to love another. They learn to accept them for where they are at not where you would like them to be.

IMO anyway

if you can love and forgive your own foibles then you can also for another. it is far easier to forgive another we are harder on ourselves. the harder lesson is the antedecentflowerforyou

I think you do have to love and value yourself before you can be in a healthy relationship with another.

you can love others. you can be there for others.

but until you believe you're also worthy of being loved, you push people away because you're afraid of being hurt.

I have no shame in sharing why.

my biological father abandoned us when I was little.
I have a sister who is 2 years older.
in a crazy way kids think, I thought it was my fault he left and that I was unloveable.

I grew up thinking this and never talked about it.
there were a couple of other things that happened along the way that also made me afraid of men.

a person who thinks they aren't worthy will easily fall for the first azzhole who speaks pretty words.
part of the reason I allowed myself to be in a destructive relationship.

when I let myself heal and learned to be comfortable with the person I am, to love myself;
I was able to expect someone to love me as I am.
I was also able to let myself give that same kind of love in return.

Absolutely true for me too. If we learn to love ourselves or when we love ourselves, we can give unconditional love to others who value us for what we are. If we need to change, we change for the better of ourselves not for other people. And if we love ourselves, we will not linger and suffer from bad memories and past hurts, we can always look back, learn from the experience and move on as a new, better and wiser person. That's how I see it. smile2 flowerforyou

Yes, true. I like to add that you can't be loved unless you love yourself.

if you follow the rule of treating others as you would want to be treated...

then you would have to know self love first before knowing how to treat others with love, too....

but that is not to say that you must put self-love above love for others... (that would be selfish)

because if self-love, means that you want to be treated by others as a priority...

then one must treat others as a priority over oneself...(selfless love)

I believe it means.. you need to be able to step outside of yourself..
and truly take a hard look at yourself..
to see if this person before you..
. is worthy capable of love..
.... are they deserving of someone else's love.... what must they change what must be overcome what hang ups.... what insecurities..... self-doubt.
.... must they work on...... before they are fit to accept someone else's love...

Love yourself. Forgive yourself. Be true to yourself. How you treat yourself sets the standard for how others will treat you!

And now I dont know how is it with my love eventually.
I dont know if I love myself but I do know I love other people.
I know that I was never able to defend myself although I knew I was right but since childhood I fought for others and their rights as a tigress.
I know I am full of fears and insecurities about myself but there exist people to whom I would trust to put my heart on their palm and I belive they would rather hurt themselves then me.
I know that Ive learnt to forgive others long before Ive learnt to forgive myself.
I know that I was always alone, without friends in my childhood, thought that I wasnt worth of any love, almost excepted it as a fact, but thats just the reason Ill never let anyone to feel alone, empty and unloved if I can help it anyhow.
I feel many times that I am not good enough in any way, thats why Ill always support others to feel better about themselves.
I know I still struggle with love for myself, but I would give the first and the last for my friends, which are sacred for me.
Trying to except everybody just the way one is - because I dont like anybody to "fix me", either.
For all the bad experiences I had in my life helped me to feel with others, have compassion, put myself in their shoes, understand, forgive their mistakes because I made so many in my life, respect them as human beings and for what they are, not what I want them to be (although its really hard sometimes to handle in these limits).
And I know I truly love other members of human mankind the way I should love myself.
But its still a long road for me to treat myself the way I treat others ohwell
