Maybe its low self esteem, or maybe it just feels better when someone tells you.

Bring back revolving doors.
Tired of pulling when it's meant to be pushed.
I'm so special.

why is it that most of us don't feel special until someone tells us that we are?

IMO/IME people do.
It's just part of how people see themselves.
A lot of mommy, and maybe daddy, telling their kids "you're special! You're unique! You can be anything you want! Everyone has 1 special thing they are good at!" and other lies.

Especially with the push towards individuality in westernized societies.

People grow up with being told that, they just assume it's true.
Momma said.

They take it for granted.
It's way down deep underneath everything.

Then, they start dating, and someone tells them "you're special," and guess what?
Chicken butt? No!

What momma said is validated!

If one person says something, and you want to believe it true, you feel it's true...and then someone else, completely unrelated, says the same thing...then you're validated!
Oooooooo, what a good feeling. Like crack.

Same reason why so many weird *** cults and religions get started.

You believe, or want to believe something, and someone you like agrees with your belief, then it's no longer a belief...it's knowledge.
Knowledge is power.
Power is security.
Security is safety and oh so good feelings.

At best "why is it that most of us don't feel special" is because we are constantly looking to have the level of our specialness validated.
Not that we are special, but just HOW special, reinforced by behavior that proves it.

And if someone (as the picture shows) whispers in your ear they think "you're special" there is a tacit understanding that they are then going to do something to prove it.

Actually, my parents told me I'm never good enough or that I wasn't living up to my full potential or what the heck happened to me. I wish they had been kinder to me. Then I was bullied in school. I had to find my special within myself and my inner strength. I am still shy and sensitive but not how I used to be when I was younger. I define myself. I chose to rise above the abuse rather than whine and become weak from it.

Hugs, baby. You can start with hugs and long, lingering kisses to heal and soothe me.

Boo Hiss not a very nice thing to say. Wait until you have a child or grandchild comes home in tears because some kid repeats this kind of bad taste humor.

My mother taught special education and anytime anyone asked what she did for a living she always answered " I am in special ed" then she would just look at. them and smirk. she always.joked with my brother and I anytime we did something stupid about getting us tested and putting us on the short bus
it was always done inn humor for she loved her job and the childrenn she worked with

I've never considered myself to be special.
Until I met someone I considered to be very special.
Truth.
