Monday on CNN’s “Newsroom with Carol Costello,” South Carolina Chapter of NAACP president Dr. Lonnie Randoph reacted to the news that President Barack Obama used the s0-called “N-word” on a podcast, and said he was “troubled by hearing that.”

Randoph said, “I was a little troubled by hearing that. I think there was a better way to express the point. Had George Washington said it as the first president, I would have been annoyed by it. Hearing it from the 44th president of the United States I’m also bothered by it. I think I know what he was trying to say, but I think there’s a better way to even say bad things. I’m disappointed in what I heard.”

Obama uses the N-word to make a point about racism

US President Barack Obama speaking about gun violence during an address to the United States Conference of Mayors in San Francisco on Friday.

President Barack Obama said the United States had not overcome its history of racism and used the N-word to make his case.

In an interview, Obama weighed in on the debate over race and guns that has erupted after the arrest of a white man in connection to what the police believe are the racially motivated shooting deaths of nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina.

"Racism, we are not cured of it," Obama said. "And it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say ****** in public.

"That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don't, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior."

Obama's remarks came during an interview out Monday with comedian Marc Maron for Maron's popular podcast, in which crude language is often part of the discussion.

The president said while attitudes about race had improved significantly since he was born to a white mother and black father, the legacy of slavery cast "a long shadow and that's still part of our DNA that's passed on."

Obama also expressed frustration that "the grip of the NRA on Congress is extremely strong" and prevented gun control from advancing in Congress after 20 children and six educators were massacred in a Connecticut elementary school in 2012.

"I will tell you, right after Sandy Hook, Newtown, when 20 6-year-olds are gunned down, and Congress literally does nothing — yes, that's the closest I came to feeling disgusted," he said. "I was pretty disgusted."

The tragedy at Sandy Hook, and the lack of response from Congress, was "disgusting" to Obama.

He said it's important to respect that hunting and sportsmanship are important to a lot of gun-owning Americans.

"The question is just is there a way of accommodating that legitimate set of traditions with some common-sense stuff that prevents a 21-year-old who is angry about something or confused about something, or is racist, or is deranged from going into a gun store and suddenly is packing, and can do enormous harm," Obama said in a reference to suspect Dylann Storm Roof, whose purported 2,500-word hate-filled manifesto talked about white supremacy. Roof faces nine counts of murder in connection with Wednesday's shooting.

Obama sat for the interview Friday in Maron's Los Angeles garage studio — close to where the president attended Occidental College — and seemed to marvel at the absurdity of it.

"If I thought to myself that when I was in college that I'd be in a garage a couple miles away from where I was living, doing an interview as president, with a comedian ... it's not possible to imagine," he said.

But he said he did the interview because he wanted to reach a nontraditional audience and "break out of these old patterns that our politics has fallen into" where "it's not this battle in a steel cage between one side and another."

With the campaign to replace him heating up, Obama said he thought he would be a better candidate if he were running again, because though he has slowed down a little bit, "I know what I'm doing and I'm fearless."

"I've screwed up," he said. "I've been in the barrel tumbling down Niagara Falls. And I emerged and I lived. And that's always such a liberating feeling."

surely if the n word is ok for black people to say, then ina equal society it should also be ok for white people to say,, or is racism only a one way street, white against black,

semantics makes it not the case

the history makes the word mean something different in different circumstances,,, its best not to say it unless one is black, just like it may be best not to call a hillbilly a hillbilly if you are from suburbia

and his point was that its NOT ok to say it, or polite to say it in public,,, proof being how its replaced with 'n word' as if having the same meaning but saying it differently makes it more polite....

i just look at it as the same as a white guy that says "dude"... i noticed when blacks say it, they are referencing another person, and not in a derogatory way either...

and his point was
His whole point had nothing to do with racism at all. That interview was just using more emotion based thinking to push his gun control agenda....if not, why mention Sandy Hook and Adam Lanza at all? Nothing racist about that event. ....and Lanza broke several already existing laws, including stealing firearms from his mom, to carry out his crime.
But hey, why not combine two hot topics, racism and gun control, together.....throw out words like the n word and "those 6 year olds" and reap the emotional benefit? Too bad it will go nowhere.
And not lost, on me anyway, is the irony of complaining about racism.....while being an African American holding the most powerful position in the world. What a hack.

sorry but if a word is wrong for whites but ok for blacks then thats a form of racism,
word is either good or bad,,, lets face it,, are we all not supposed to be equal,, so were either equal or not,
if were all the same and equal whats good for the goose is good for the gander,
so if blacks say ******, then whites say ******,, everyone is equal

Buddy, you should be outraged but you're notwhoa

repeating a terrible joke is in bad taste, repeating an offensive racist joke is just unacceptable... Perhaps more scrutiny about this Israeli ministers choices in general is warranted.

i think we should give Israel more money... there's enough hatred against Israel already, she can hate obarry if she wants... why should i agree or disagree with her? but i happen to agree with her, he is weak and a bad person for my countries presidency... IMO, of course... seems like with the invention of the internet, people are not allowed any opinion anymore...

surprised

I think you're right, raise Americas National debt for Israel

To put things in perspective:

Greece, 11 million population, 350 Billion owed = $31 818/each

America, 318 million population, 18 Trillion owed = $56 603/each

Have a nice day! waving

Back on topic, Say no to racism!
