LUCKNOW, India (AP) Two brothers in northern India beheaded their teenage sister and carried her head through their village because they disapproved of her romantic relationship with a cousin, police said Wednesday.

At least a dozen people watched as 17-year-old Phool Jehan was dragged out of her house, beaten and beheaded by her brothers late Monday, but they did not inform the police, officer Rajesh Singh said. The crime was reported by a local security guard.

Police have been unable to find the two brothers. Their ages were not clear, but they were both older than their sister.

After beheading Jehan, Nanhe and Gul Hasan left their sister's body in the street and roamed around the village with her head, shouting that they were against the relationship, Singh said.

Honor killings are common across India, but such brutal slayings are extremely rare.

As India modernizes rapidly, it finds itself in the midst of huge social turmoil as young people challenge accepted social norms. As more people attempt to break from tradition, they face backlash, often violent, especially in rural areas.

India also is considered one of the harshest places in the world for women, with female infanticide and child marriage still common.

The United Nations' gender inequality index places India next to last, above only Saudi Arabia, based on labor, reproductive health, education and politics. The index does not consider issues of violence.

While the brothers are on the run, police have detained Jehan's cousin to question him, said B. Kumar, another police officer.

Horrific crime! And disgraceful that I ONLY found ONE American article on her murder, but 17-19 articles from around the world, which ALL say, her murder was/ is a MUSLIM ' HONOR ' KILLING... except ours !!! frustrated

Oh gee, heaven forbid the U.S. press say anything bad about Islam. On that issue, it's simple. American news organizations are scared sh*tless of Muslims. Nobody wants their high priced, on air talent car bombed into oblivion during their morning coffee or the 6:30 national news.

With studios situated in dense urban environments, and little physical protection available to their very expensive broadcast center, the networks have made a value judgement not to poke the 'lone wolves' out there with a sharp stick.

In regards to this poor young woman, honor killings happen so often in the middle and far east that it rarely makes a dent in our press. Ones that do take place in North America are never called honor killings unless the police publicly state that as the reason. The only scrap of solace for the victim is the beheading means she dies somewhat quickly, compared to the usual cause of female death in India. Cooking accidents.

India was under close scrutiny for years because of the high rate of 'cooking deaths' amongst new brides. In India, the dowry system is still in place. The brides family ponies up tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, land, designer goods, etc. The marriage takes place and sometimes after the fact, the groom or his family demand more. If the brides family does not pay up, she meets a gruesome end by being burned to death. Sometimes the victim is in a coma for months or years before passing away. IF she survives, there is the tremendous pain of recovering from what is usually third degree burns, and there is the very real possibility that being horribly disfigured leaves her unsuitable for marriage ever again.

The excuse given to the police is always the bottled gas tank being used malfunctioned, and she was too close to the stove. The groom is now free to marry again, and acquire more wealth. Kill off a couple wives and you are on easy street.

Now we find Indian men collecting the dowry, marrying the woman and heading straight to the airport for Canada, England, America. They leave the bride high and dry. They live somewhere for a year or so, and head back to another city in India. Meet a new woman, repeat the scenario.

What to stockbrokers call it? Pump and dump?

And, 'White Hispanic , Asian American, Native American, ...
I don't understand those... I really don't. So called, ' White ' do not put themselves in one group, any more than Asians do, or Natives. There are too many countries, cultures & tribes.

People better WAKE UP & smell the coffee & realize as a WHOLE, as all AMERICANS, that we are being pitted & played & why. think

It is amazing that in this day that ANY country would allow this to happen.. continuously. That they find it to be acceptable. But they do

And we have our own home grown version who feel that somehow women deserve to be treated like that. That somehow they deserve to be slapped around, knocked out or raped. That they did something wrong that would warrant that treatment. That because of the mans standing in society, that is acceptable.

When you see that mentality right in your own country That frankly, is shocking.

As of 2011, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of the parliament) were women. However, women in India continue to face numerous problems, including violent victimization through rape, acid throwing, dowry killings, and the forced prostitution of young girls.[8][9][10]

I dont know about other countries and how they track their population,, but here we use categories that include gender and ancestral background

in US culture, we certainly do belong to different ancestral groups and there is nothing wrong with it anymore than putting ourselves in different gender groups,,,or family groups,, for that matter

makes none of us any less 'american' than the next, but points to how we came into the INDIVIDUAL existence that we also have

i believe their figures would come out much lower than the actual rate.

that goes for both violence and infidelity.

stacking it against north american and european statistics would be an inaccurate comparison.

And for one minute you really think that women of India report rapes and abuses? Knowing the track record against women in that country? knowing how they would be perceived?. The repercussions they would be dealt, including ridicule, disownment, disfigurement or even death?

Knowing the warped social stigma they faced for reporting abuse and rape, you really think they report it.

Do American women face the possibility of being labeled a outcast in their own family and community, having acid thrown in their face, being stoned to death or beheaded for reporting against a male.

Do they?

Really?

what She wasn't unfaithful.
All the articles say, " Her (older) brothers did not approve of her relationship with a cousin. They jumped to conclusions.

* Assuming women are guilty of sexual missconduct again, to justify men behaving like criminals ... fascinating & disturbing spock *

Your hate of a race is apparent . You continue to slander all Muslims . What do you not get about generalisations and the harm such statements incite . You are smart enough to know there is good and bad in every race .. Every religion .. Every culture . Condone those who commit crime if you must but have the decency to respect muslims who are not supportive of this brutality .
--------------------------------
Amusing, considering your loathing of Jehovah of Jesus Christ & Israel & American has always been obvious, as well as your defense of evil.

I don't care if you don't like my views or beliefs or my longing for justice... thruout the world.
I don't need ,require , nor desire your approval.

Take Care waving

the difference is .. I do not loathe Jesus .. Or any god . I do not believe . I never condone those who believe .. It is their right . My posts on religion are my beliefs . They are not hate for those who believe . Your words target all muslims with hate and disregard

I stand by what I said. You are only confirming it. The truth is the truth.
Not my problem, if you don't approve.

I have nothing left to say to you & no need to explain or defend or rationalize myself to you.

You must have me confused with someone else. laugh
