How many languages can you speak and what are they?

I can speak English and I am learning Te Reo (maori).

As a child in our schools english was the main language taught. French was the only an option at High school.
Now days students learn different languages and cultures because it's part of the NZ Education Curriculum in all year levels.

I speak just English. Another reason to learn more languages is most jobs require a person to be at least able to speak French as well.

I have learnt learning another language helps me to understand another culture and how people are and why there are the way there.

I have also learnt that it is more beneficial for a young child to learn as it helps with the development of the brain. They can pick it up faster than an adult.
My grandson is learning english, Te Reo and sieg as these are the cultures in his home. He is 2 an half years old.

Eric, why doesn't that surprise me.

Apart from my own language (Dutch), English, I was learning Scottish Gaelic, but that has ended up on the back burner for now.
I still know a little of Indonesian (used to be fluent, but you can't remember it all  )

So basically Dutch & English

i can speak a small amount of German, french, Dutch and Spanish,
when i say a small amount i mean i know enough to ask for most things and to hold a small conversation, and to say i don't speak the language very well

i am fascinated with languages and would love to be multilingual in lots of languages.
i am not the typical Brit/American who doesn't think they need to learn a language because every one else should speak English

I get by/survive in dutch and any other language close to the above
this Swiss extract for example:

Ali Mnsche send frey ond gebore met de glicher Wrde ond de gliche Rcht. Si send xsgnet met Vernonft ond Gwsse ond sllid enand met eme brederleche Gischt beggne.

all humans are free and born with equal dignity and rights. They are blessed with reasoning and conscience [LOLZ], and should treat each other in a brotherly spirit.

I studied the serbo-croatian language some time ago. Its has two alphabets for writing, Cyrillic and Latin.

I need to get back to it as my 8 y/o is being raised bilingual and will soon be fluent in this language, if not already.

German and English, were the two languages spoken in the household, as I was growing up.

Outside of that, I'm not admitting anything.

I only know a nearly uselessly small amount of German, but I do knwo English far better than many Americans do, so that almost counts as a foreign language. Except I can't type for crap.

In California it is fast becoming required to speak Spanish. Here even the Asians and Russians speak Spanish because I guess it is easier than "American" which I think is easy but I am told by those who do speak several languages say is often mystifying. Which I get with how the slang and so forth seems to be constantly evolving.

Slowly but surely I am trying to move away form the most confusing
and hard to translate "Southern and Hillbilly" phrases I have used for years. If I used "Home speak" most of you would not understand me at all. How many of you can decipher my typos and spelling flubs is anyone's guess. I have noticed now that I don't depend on Dragon Speaks I hope I am catching more errors.
