Actor Randy Quaid ordered released; facing deportation

American actor Randy Quaid was ordered released Thursday by Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board but still faces being sent back to the United States next week.

Actor Randy Quaid arrives at his Immigration and Refugee Board hearing in Montreal, Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015. Quaid said in an interview that he could be deported from Canada next week and that he would like to resolve his legal issues in California and "move on with my life." The actor and his Canadian wife fled the U.S. in 2010, saying they were victims of persecution.

Quaid appeared before the board for a detention review. A Canada Border Services Agency official told the board member hearing the case that Quaid was arrested because it was felt he wouldn't comply with an order to leave the country next Wednesday. But that fear was rejected by the board member and Quaid was ordered released.

Quaid, 65, was informed this week he would be sent back to the United States, where he faces an outstanding warrant and pending criminal charges. Sporting a massive beard and shoulder-length grey hair, Quaid was silent during the hearing as his wife, Evi, sat in the audience. They both left the downtown Montreal office, politely declining comment.

Quaid said in interview with The Associated Press from a detention center in Laval, Quebec on Wednesday that he would like to resolve his legal issues in California and "move on with my life." Quaid's bid for permanent residency in Canada was denied in 2012, and it can take years for deportation to follow. He was arrested in Montreal in May after becoming the subject of a nationwide arrest warrant when he stopped checking in border authorities. He later apologized and was released, with the requirement to check in every two weeks.
The actor and his Canadian wife fled the U.S. in 2010, saying they were victims of persecution. Quaid has sought to stay in Canada, saying he was being hunted by "Hollywood star-whackers" who had killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

The couple faces legal problems in the U.S. They began in 2010, when the Quaids were charged with trespassing and causing more than $5,000 in damage to the guesthouse of a California home they once owned. They were allegedly squatting in it when they were arrested. Two days before they were charged, they traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Santa Barbara Senior Deputy District Attorney Lee Carter said Wednesday there is an active extradition order for Quaid on a felony vandalism case, and prosecutors would be seeking his extradition if he's returned to the United States. Carter said Quaid and his wife also face felony charges for failing to appear at a November 2010 court hearing while out on bail.

Randy Quaid is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid and is best known for his roles in films such as "National Lampoon's Vacation" and "Independence Day." He told the AP the couple's behavior, statements and videos they've posted to social media, including a sex tape, are an act and a way of expressing themselves.

I don't get why he has to apply for California residency?
Is he not a citizen of the USA?

On October 22, 2010, Quaid and his wife sought protection under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, after being arrested in the Kerrisdale neighborhood of Vancouver.[29] Subsequently, they applied for refugee status on the grounds that they fear for their lives in the United States, claiming that numerous actors have died under mysterious circumstances committed by the "Hollywood star whackers".[30] They were granted bail on the condition of $10,000 bond pending further Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada hearings.[31] However, due to their failure to deposit the required bond with the court for several days, they remained in custody of the Canada Border Services Agency.[32] They were released on October 27 after the discovery that Evi Quaid is a "prima facie Canadian citizen".[33][34][35] On July 15, 2011 an attempt to extradite Randy and Evi Quaid from Canada failed when the U.S. Department of Justice turned down a request from the Santa Barbara County district attorney calling for the Quaids to be returned to California to face the felony burglary charges dating from the September 2010 incident.[36] As a result, Quaid and his wife would be subject to arrest in the United States.[37] In January 2013, Canadian immigration officials denied Randy Quaid's request for permanent resident status in Canada[38] while leaving open the option to challenge this decision in Canadian Federal Court.[39]

Quaid has been living in Montreal since 2013 under immigration detention in Laval, Quebec[40] until his conditional release by the Immigration and Refugee Board on 8 Oct 2015 under the condition that he return to the US within two weeks.[41]

In 2011, Evi produced a low-budget docudrama, Star Whackers, starring Randy, which ruminated upon the allegedly existent criminal conspiracy. Described as "drugged-out dreck" by Vancouver Sun film critic Peter Bernie,[42] the film screened at least once, but has not been commercially released.

The "star whackers" theory has attracted the interest of film industry critics and gossips,[43] as well as conspiracy theorists who fancy the "whackers" are responsible for the strange demises of myriad other Hollywood workers, such as Philip Seymour Hoffman and David Carradine.[44]

so he claims they were in danger but in actuality he was about to be brought up on charges and this is why they took off in the first place?

why were they squatting in the guest house of the mansion they used to live in? were they broke? tax evasion problems?
so they caused damages to it
the owners brought them on charges
they never showed up in court
now it's a felony
so he runs off to Canada

Heath Ledger died from a drug overdose

is this guy paranoid delusional?

I suggest he learn to chant "Death to Infidels!" in flawless Arabic. That will likely get him a favourable immigration hearing result.

Maybe if he claims to be a gay, lesbian, pizza baker he could score a few more points on the immigration form.

Either that or he promises to make a "Canadian Vacation" movie?

Just spitballin' here people. Let's see if we can help the guy out. I mean he did handle the aliens in Independence Day right? lol

Just a personal observation from my many trips into Canada... province vs. province, Ontario seemed to me, more accepting of immigrants from the U.S..

Quaid taken into custody in Vermont trying to cross border

American actor Randy Quaid was taken into custody Friday night while trying to cross into the United States from Canada, Vermont State Police said.

The "Independence Day" actor was detained by troopers at the Highgate Springs port of entry days after Canadian officials said he would be deported. Quaid is wanted in Santa Barbara, California, to face felony vandalism charges filed in 2010 after he and his wife, Evi, were found squatting in a guesthouse of a home they previously owned.

The pair skipped several court appearances and went to Canada, where Evi Quaid was granted citizenship. Randy Quaid's bid to gain permanent residency was denied.

The 65-year-old actor said in interview with The Associated Press from a detention center in Laval, Quebec, on Wednesday that he would like to resolve his legal issues in California and "move on with my life."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents detained the Quaids at the Vermont port of entry at about 8 p.m. Friday after determining they were fugitives from justice and subject to extradition, State Police said. They were taken into custody by troopers, and a judge set bail at $500,000 each. Randy Quaid was being held at the North West State Correctional Center and Evi Quaid at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. They are expected to be arraigned in Vermont on Monday, according to a county prosecutor.

Randy Quaid's bid for permanent residency in Canada was denied in 2012, and it can take years for deportation to follow. He was arrested in Montreal in May after becoming the subject of a nationwide arrest warrant when he stopped checking in with border authorities. He later apologized and was released, with the requirement to check in every two weeks.

The actor and his Canadian wife fled the U.S. in 2010, saying they were victims of persecution. Quaid said he was being hunted by "Hollywood star-whackers" who killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger.

The couple's current legal problems in California stem from a 2010 arrest when they were charged with trespassing and causing more than $5,000 in damage to the guesthouse of a home they once owned. They were allegedly squatting in it when they were arrested. Two days before they were charged, they traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia.

Randy Quaid and Wife Set Free as Vermont Judge Dismisses Fugitive Charges -

NBC News http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/randy-quaid-wife-set-free-vermont-judge-dismisses-fugitive-charges-n445451/

A state judge in Vermont dismissed fugitive charges Thursday against actor Randy Quaid and his wife, and their lawyer indicated they would return to California to face 5-year-old felony charges.

Quaid and his wife, Evi, were arrested last week while trying to cross into the United States from Canada. They had lived in Canada since 2010, when Randy Quaid was charged with vandalism and unauthorized entry in Santa Barbara, California, where he and his wife were found squatting in a guest house of a home they contended they still owned.

Santa Barbara County, California, District Attorney Joyce Dudley told The Free Press of Burlington, Vermont, that she hadn't yet reviewed the ruling.

The Quaids were initially held on $500,000 bail each when they were arrested last week. Vermont Superior Court Judge Alison Arms later reduced the bond to $50,000, and on Thursday she dismissed it completely, saying she had found no probable cause to hold the couple or to extradite them to California as fugitives.

They were immediately unshackled and released, leaving the courthouse in St. Albans in their jail jumpsuits.

"I'm glad the judge was fair and she took the time to get her decision correct," Randy Quaid said outside the courthouse with his attorney at his side. "I feel like this stage of it is very much in our favor as far as the overall case back in California goes. We've always said we were innocent."

The Quaids' attorney, Peter Langrock, said the couple plans to stay in Vermont for now because Evi Quaid's father is sick.

"We had a great judge," Langrock said, prompting Quaid to interject: "I didn't think so 15 minutes ago."

Langrock indicated that the Quaids would return to California, saying the couple would contest the felony charges, but "not as fugitives from justice."

Randy Quaid nodded his head in apparent agreement, started to speak and then stopped himself.

"I'm taking the lead on my attorney's advice in that regard" and not commenting, he said.
