Washington (AFP) - President Barack Obama will take part Thursday in a town hall-style meeting to discuss new efforts to stem what he has called an epidemic of gun violence across America.

Obama, who recently singled out gun violence as one of the most urgent pieces of "unfinished business" facing him, will take questions from the audience during the event, to be aired on CNN at 8 p.m. (2300 GMT).

The program is to be held at George Mason University in Fairfax, in northern Virginia.

The president has frequently expressed frustration at Congress's failure to pass tougher gun-control measures, even after some of the worst mass shootings in the nation's history.

Beginning his final year in office, he is set to meet Monday with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss possible new actions he can take.

According to CNN and The New York Times, Obama is expected to announce executive action to expand background checks on gun sales before his State of the Union address on January 12.

Guns claim more than 30,000 lives in America each year, over half of them suicides.

Same can be said about many gun related deaths.
"Accidents happen."

However, a notable percentage of automobile deaths, are suicides and homicides.

Gallup poll refutes Obama’s gun control obsession
January 4, 2016 | Tom Tillison |

President Obama is expected to go before the American people any day now to stress the urgency to act on the “epidemic of gun violence.”

But a newly released Gallup Poll questions whether the American people see this as a pressing concern.

In pursuit of what he called “unfinished business” — see legacy item — in his most recent radio address, the president spoke of letters he has received from parents, teachers and children on the issue to say he can’t “sit around and do nothing.”

All of which follows the left’s blueprint to first create a crisis, then offer the solution.

Unfortunately, the new Gallup Poll shows “guns/gun control” at the bottom of Americans’ most pressing concerns in 2015, ranking 19th out of 23 top problems facing the country, according to CNS News.

According to Gallup, only one percent of respondents mentioned guns/gun control as a concern for most of the months in 2015, although mentions spiked to 7 percent in October and December following mass shootings in those months that dominated the news. (The overall average for the year was 2 percent.)

That’s 19th out of 23 … which means Obama can thank his lucky stars a complicit media will faithfully carry his water when he states the urgency of circumventing Congress with his questionable executive action.

The top five problems that concern Americans are the Obama-led government, the economy, jobs, illegal immigration and health care, followed by ethical/moral decline, race relations/racism and terrorism.

All topics Obama has harmed more than helped, according to most critics.

Here is the list of the most important problems facing the country last year, according to the Gallup Poll results:

Thats because Americans with common sense realize there is no "gun show loophole" and that extended background checks wont do a damn thing to stop Pookie from selling Ray Ray that stolen Hi-Point he's been stashing...and Pookie and Ray Ray dont have a chance in hell of ever being on an airplane so putting them on a no-fly list doesnt do a damn thing either.

Gun stocks continue to soar as rest of market slides | OregonLive.com

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2016/01/gun_stocks_continue_to_soar_as.html/

By The Associated Press

on January 04, 2016 at 11:38 AM, updated January 04, 2016 at 11:39 AM

With all major markets in a severe sell-off Monday, shares of companies that make guns surged as new data pointed to strong sales at the close of 2015, a year marked by mass shootings in Paris and California, and new political pressure to tighten regulations.

President Barack Obama is slated to finalize new executive actions Monday aimed at curbing gun violence and unregulated sales. The president has taken nearly two dozen executive actions to tighten gun laws but has been unable to push measures like expanded background checks through Congress.

Recently released numbers from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System show that background checks jumped about 38 percent last month compared with December 2014.

"It's the biggest growth of the year," said Wedbush Securities analyst James Hardiman. "Probably safe to say gun sales were up a lot in the month of December."

The November attack in Paris that left more than 100 dead and another attack in San Bernardino, California, just two weeks later, killing 14, capped a year in which mass shootings came one after another.

An October attack at a community college in Oregon left 10 dead, four months after nine African-American church members were gunned during a Bible study group inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

High profile shootings push gun sales because some people feel less safe or fear tightened gun ownership rules, Hardiman said.

Shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. rose almost 6 percent Monday, one of the biggest percentage gains over the past year for the gunmaker. Its shares hit an all-time high two weeks ago.

Shares of Sturm, Ruger & Co. rose almost 3 percent. Stock in the Southport, Connecticut, gunmaker hit a 52-week high last month.
