I have no idea how bad TV is in Nigeria. But here in the USA we HAVE to pay for cable networks or satellite connection to even have TV reception now. * not like the good ol' days laugh * or buy a convertor box and only be able to watch 4-6 channels.

And too much sex & sex agenda & political agenda.

I got rid of all. And occasionally watch a movie on DVD.

Are we watching to many violence on TV?

IMO sort of.
IMO people are just watching too much.
Focused too much on screens and entertainment and trying to constantly stimulate their brain and emotional centers so they always feel things like strong and powerful and non marginalized with whatever causes rage or outrage, or happy and loved with romantic crap, or safe and validated with social media.

I think too many people are pretty much junkies using the glass teat attempting to mainline constant emotional highs, or possibly as a means to avoid negative ones, because a normal resting emotional or mental state and long term dealing with problems has become unacceptable.

i.e. the songs with lyrics "I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all," or, "guess I'd rather hurt than feel nothing at all."

That is really stupid.

So, people are watching just enough violence on t.v. to get what they really want from it.

TV networks are like politicians.
They don't ask you what you want.
They just tell you.. This is what you want... This is what you need to buy...This is what you need to believe.. This is the way society is, so except it.

No, but I've always been one for a bit of the old ultra-violence when done correctly.

Also, MASH was not a lighthearted show. There was that whole "chicken" episode which I still think is one of the darkest episodes in the history of television.

 That 'chicken' episode changed the dynamic of years of the series. It went from cold/ adult humor to dark/shock in minutes

I'd say "no," myself.

It's not the quantity of violence that matters. We had tons of it when I was a kid. Heck, the majority of afternoon movies and TV shows, consisted of giant atomic monsters and space aliens killing thousands, and world war two battles, and "Westerns." TV included lots of casual killing.

If anything, things got BETTER when the violence became more realistic. When people started to realize that shooting someone doesn't just result in them slapping one hand over their shoulder and wincing, a lot of people I knew started backing away from the joy of death.

What I think IS a big problem, is the recent rise of Praising Self Righteousness. It's a sort of a throw back to the old days of "it's WONDERFUL when the hero goes nuts, and shoots EVERYONE IN SIGHT, because almost everyone is "bad."

So I'd suggest, don't focus so much on the quantity of violence, look at what the MESSAGE being doled out ABOUT the violence.

Too true Conrad.

Guess for me, my dad got back from Vietnam. He taught me gun safety. Told me lots of scary stories. Watched violent Looney Tunes and others. Just had a great respect for people. But I blew up a ton of stuff with firecrackers. On fourth of July in the 70's we used to have wars with other kids with firecracker grenades. Skyrocket rifles. Man I can still feel the powder burns! Guess we did like a kind of violence. In 1976 or 77 there was a redhead girl in California. She shot out of her yard with a .22 rifle her dad gave her. She shot into a school. Can't remember if anyone was killed. It was the craziest thing me and my friends had everheard. She said she did it because she didn't like Mondays! I never thought something like that would ever happen again. brokenheart

Why do you think I only watch light-hearted TV shows? laugh. Violence is taking over TV. I've even stopped watching traditional well-known soaps, such as, 'Coronation Street', 'Emmerdale', 'Eastenders', because as well as getting rid of most of their long-term actors/actresses, the plot lines are so exaggerated. It feels like a farce just from watching them. Those kinds of shows make me feel down. I only carried on watching them, as I got older, because I used to watch them with my mum. We used to watch them together. I think my sisters are now doing that with her, as I moved out. I think nothing much of these blood and gore fests. They all look the same. All of the trailers you see for these modern-day movies, are just as bad. They all seem to have the same idea, which always seem to be about murdering someone.

You know if you buy a digital antena you get free TV channels for free? Here in the states. My favorites are ME TV a 70,80 and 90 TV reruns. The THIS channel is a movie and TV reruns going back to the 50's. Comet TV is a sci fi and horror channel. These channels are transmitted from Chicago and New York. You can also pull down cbs, nbc, abc,pbs or as I call it the original 4. So go to your radioshack or online and order a digital antena and go crazy, for free!
