Imagine a world without plastic shopping bags. Well, the future for bags could be plastic free. There is a growing international movement to ban or discourage the use of plastic carriers because of their disastrous environmental effects. Countries from Australia to Zanzibar are cracking down. Other countries such as Bangladesh, Ireland, Italy, South Africa and Taiwan have also taken action.

The ubiquitous plastic carrier has gained a reputation as an eco-menace which kills thousands of marine animals, creates litter, chokes up land fill sites and consumes unnecessary resources and energy.

Individuals, groups, local councils and businesses are taking positive steps to abolish plastic bags, saying: ‘We just don’t need them!’

Look at the figures! Plastic bags take between 400 to 1,000 years to biodegrade, although on average a bag is used for just 12 minutes before being discarded. The UK shopper uses 300 bags each year. Worldwide, one million bags are used every minute adding up to 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags per year!

I switched last year to cloth tote bags so I could quit using the plastic ones. They're great, they hold tons more than a plastic one and I just keep them in my trunk for when I need them. And, they were cheap, I paid less than $1/bag on Ebay.

Thats a great plan Suz...

Although I still use plastic, I have always reused them. Ikeep them in my car for shopping; I use them as garbage bags (instead of going out and buying garbage bags, save the money and reuse the plastic shopping bags)...

People are using bio bags more and more and they don't even know it. Best way to check is like the one website showed. Putting them out int he weather and see what happens.

I found out since when I save my plastic soda bottles, I just throw them outside in bags. The bags begin to disintigrate within about 2 to 4 weeks. I have to turn the bottles in or replace the bags.........these are white trash bags. The grocery kind are like that too, or at least most of them are.

Not all are, but it looks like things are taking a turn for the better little by little

Personaly I reuse my plastic bags. Some get used as a liner for my bathroom waste can, some get used as packing when I mail packages I sold on ebay. Still, an enviromental problem is an enviroemental problem, I'm all for a sollution on that one;^]

Yuppers. I re-use mine too. Have tons of them hahaha. Even the ones with holes in them. Stuff a bunch in the bottom of the trash can, and voila, next time you empty it, there is another ready to be used.

Thanks for posting this, Daniel...

I love the synchronicity of what is going on in the world.

Yesterday I spent the entire afternoon and evening, with a friend, making personalised Calico bags, for everyone we know.

For that exact reason...a healthy alternative to plastic bags, and we support our cotton industry along with it.

And our Primary school kids have a project running, with calico bags through our local shops, they supply the hessian, and calico tote bags, for a dollar, and have a screen printed message on them, about what these bags are doing differently for our marine animals and our reef.

The message gets out there, even the casual observer can read the message on the bag.flowerforyou
