All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

The strangest thing that human speech and human writing can do is create a metaphor. That is an amazing leap, is it not?

If you need to censor something because you afriad your whole belief system will crumble if people experience something you really need to get a better basis for what you believe.

I don't think censorship in our country is the problem. The real problem is political correctness gone amuck. Because of political correctness, everyone has to be careful of every word that is said.

Two years ago I started working with a different group of people. To make a long story short, I got confused with the names of our associates. All four are males in their forties, tall, average build with dark hair. I described the associate I wanted to see as the guy with the slight limp. I couldn't believe it .... the Corporate VP of the company called me into his office and gave me a lecture on my lack of insensitivity.

One of the neighbors is all upset, because the school is making a big stink about her daughter calling another child fat. It doesn't matter that the other child called her stupid, and she got even by saying the other child was fat. The school officials explained to my neighbor that the child is not fat; she is physically challenged by her weight.

Additionally look at the people being fired over the "hanging" and "noose" reference. It is crazy.

To sum it up, it isn't censorship that is the problem. It is political correctness.

Fat is the result of a physical challenge? In the case of a thyroid issue I would agree but it appears that most kids have a problem with planting their asses in front of a video game while stuffing their hand into the Twinkie box.

zapchaser..... Apparently my post wasn't clear. What I tried to say is that political correctness is censorship in that we do not have free speech. I do not condone name calling, but what is the big deal about my referring to someone as the guy with the limp? I shouldn't be called on the carpet for that. Someone should have just taken me aside and say, hey Leah, the guy is self-conscious about his limp. Next time don't refer to it.

My neighbor's child should not be suspended for a day for calling another child fat, whereas nothing was done to the other child for using the term stupid. Both children should have been told it is not proper to indulge in name-calling.

The Imus people of this world should not lose their jobs for using racial slurs. We their audience should turn them off.

There was an article arouond Christmas time, saying Santa was not allowed to say "ho ho ho," because rap singers use the term "ho" to mean whore. Therefore, if a woman walks by a Santa and he says "ho ho ho," she might be offended. Theerfore, Santa was told to say "ha ha ha."

So, my point is in lieu of decrying censorship, which really isn't that bad in this country, let's stop all of this silly political correctness, which is worst than censorship.
