Topic: A Girl's Best Friend Ch.1 | |

OK This is a bit long, but it's been a long running joke so here goes...
When I was young my mother always told ‘the curious kitten always gets bitten’. Now, as a child I couldn’t understand this. How was I a kitten? I’m not furry like them and I pee in a toilet. And isn’t curiosity a good thing? Isn’t that how you learn? As always I just left this up to my mom being a little crazy. Recently, however, I’ve discovered that ‘mother knows best’ is also a very true statement. If I had only listened to my mother, maybe life would be a lot different right now. To explain what I mean, I’ll really have to start at the beginning. You see, I’m currently a student with a very heavy course load. Things go fast and I have to learn faster or nothing makes any sense. It’s a lot of stress and I need a way to calm myself. Lately I’ve taken to going for hikes as I live in a large city, with lots of trees and a very good trail that runs for miles through it. One Saturday morning not so long ago I got up, grab some shoes and my camera and heading for the trail. It was just after 7am when I left the house and it looked as though the rain had just ended. The trees were covered in a fine mist and the ground was soft and squished under my runners as I got deeper into the forest. I like to take my camera to snap pictures of anything interesting I may come across. Like the dew on the leaves, an animal that hadn’t noticed me yet, or a fog covering the river. Today was no different. I got several beautiful shots before finding a large rock near the river to sit on. Usually I’ll find a quiet spot like this to sit and enjoy the solitude. Clearing my mind after a busy week is very important to my sanity. So I’ll usually sit some place with a coffee (if I bother to stop for one) and smoke a joint or just relax. Now when I head to the forest I try to go a bit farther every time and try and explore some place I never had before. I had noticed a bit of odd looking rubble about 300 metres down the banks from where I sat and I decided to head down there to explore a bit. I finished my sit down and headed that way at a steady pace taking in the way the forest looked emerald green in the early morning sun, and listening to the river trickling over the rocks to my left. Usually I’m completely alone and I relish those moments. As I approached the rubble I noticed it was an old building that had been left to rot for years. I climbed up the highest piece of the old wall and looked out over the river as far as I could see. And that’s when I saw him. I wasn’t alone here. There was no way I could deny it. He was right there on the opposite side of the river. Right in front of my eyes! No matter how much I wanted to deny it…there he was! The shock of it nearly made me fall right on my head! I slowly climbed down and tried to decide whether to run away or get a bit closer. This is when my mother’s sneering voice entered my head and made my decision for me. Damn my rebellious nature. I tried to keep to the trees so as not to be noticed. I didn’t want him to run of he saw me. I wanted to be able to at least get a good picture or two. I ended up hiding behind a large oak tree directly across from him hoping he wouldn’t be able to see me from here. I pulled out my camera and took a couple of pictures. I couldn’t be sure what he was doing. It looked like he was walking back and forth up and down the banks mumbling something to himself. He was shaking his big furry head and when he wasn’t pulling his hair he was flailing his arms in the air. Good God I’ve found a Sasquatch! I couldn’t believe it myself! What in the world was a Sasquatch doing pacing the Grand River? I mean, I know they’ve been rumoured to be here in Canada forever but right here in my woods…I was completely shocked. Suddenly threw his hands up and let out the loudest roar I’d ever heard. It was somewhere between a wounded animal and a Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage’s ‘ooooh yea!’ This startled me and I admit to screaming like a little girl. (You would have too!) He saw me. He was looked right at me. The big hairy frustrated Sasquatch had spotted me. Why hadn’t I listened to my mother? Why, oh why? His beady black eyes looked at me as his shoulders heaved with his frustration and I couldn’t help but to whimper a little bit. Seven feet of hairy man-animal staring you down is the most intimidating thing in the world. I hope it never happens to you. He grunted loudly and then, to my immediate fear and trepidation, took a running start at me! He ran into the river and was headed straight for me. Grunting the whole way. Grunt, splash, grunt, yell, splash. At this point I know you’re thinking “Run! Idiot girl! Run” But I couldn’t. I was paralysed with shock and my mind wasn’t telling me anything except for “Oh my god, oh my god, it’s gonna eat me!” I stood there behind my tree in a stupor as he barrelling straight towards me, embracing that I’d die a horrible painful death when he got across the river and stopped. He just stopped, right in front of me. Looking at me like he wasn’t quite sure if I was real and what I was doing there. I had to crane my neck to look at his face, his furry toothy face and he looked down at me and grunted. I jumped and whimpered again. Trying to be brave, I managed a weak smile at him. All I got was another grunt. He seemed to be waiting for something. Did he want me to do something? Did he want me to run? Is that how he liked his food? Grunting again he pointed down to his leg and I noticed he had an odd sort of metal bit wrapped around his leg. It looked as though he had some sort of trap attached to him that he had tried to beat off. The water must have washed of all the blood but he seemed more annoyed by the thing than in pain. It suddenly dawned on me that he wanted me to remove it. Was that too much to ask? I thought that I may as well help him out before he ate me. Who wants to be in pain before dinner? I slowly moved closer to him, watching for any sign from him to back away. He lifted his arm as I got closer and I hesitated. He pointed again and grunted. Ok Boss, I’m working on it, was all I could think. The trap seemed to be wedged around his leg but hadn’t really punctured his skin. Sasquatches must have super strong skin as well as silky hair. Who would have known? As I looked I noticed a little latch along the bottom of the trap and slowly turned it while eyeing him warily. I really hoped it wouldn’t hurt him or pull his hair. The latch screeched loudly as it turned and the trap abruptly popped off his leg! He was so shocked that it worked that he yelped loudly. He bent down, picked up the trap, and hurled it across to the other side of the river causing me to fall right onto my butt. After his ‘I Hate Trap’ hurling episode he looked down at me curiously as I lay there on my backside and grunted again. Then he gave me what I’d best describe as a toothy grin. All teeth and fur, and not in the least bit comforting. Is this what they do before they eat you? He smiled with all those teeth and reached down, hurling me into the arm in the tightest bear hug I’ve ever been in. I was having a hard time breathing and this caused me to be less frightened. I guess as the air left my lungs the fear went with it. I yelled at him, “I can’t breathe!” and to my great surprise he loosened his grip! I figured by this point I had nothing to lose. Being in the arms of a hairy, wet, 7 foot Sasquatch I decided to take my chances. “Ok big fella, time to let the little girl go.” He didn’t seem to understand as he cocked his head to the side like a curious dog. “Fella?” he repeated in a deep confused voice. I was shocked. Wide eyed even! He could talk? I never imagined that he could talk! “Yes, fella, I don’t really know how they do it in your society, but in mine it’s not polite to manhandle women!” ok so maybe I was taking it too far. Bite your tongue girl. Before he does. “No Fella!” he grunted out, “Chu Chu!” My face must have shown my extreme confusion and he repeated much louder “Chu Chu!” “Ok! You’re name is Chu Chu?” I asked, and he nodded, “Well, Chu Chu, can you let me down please? You’re getting me all wet.” “K.” And I was dropped on the ground. And it was a far enough fall for me being as short as I am. He really needed some etiquette lessons. “Girl?” He was pointing at me. “My name is Sara.” I replied. “Sara, thanks you, Chu Chu does. Sara help Chu Chu. Now Chu Chu not angry.” He smiled again. It was starting to grow on me. That scared me a bit. “Well I’m glad I could help Chu Chu. Anything else I can help with?” I couldn’t figure out why I was asking him if he needed help. What was I thinking? 5 minutes ago I was sure he was going to eat me and now I want to help him more? Must be a bad trip or something. He looked down at me and shrugged sadly, “Be friend?” And how could I say no to that? That was the day I met Chu Chu and only the beginning of our epic friendship. What more could a girl want besides her own 7 foot tall double dipping Sasquatch? (But that’s another story.) |

![]() ![]() No, this was really good and of course filled with the imagery you are excellent at writing with. You paint a really good picture, as I've said before you are excellent when you write and illustrate the story very well with your words. Only line I had difficulty with was "I stood there behind my tree in a stupor as he barrelling straight towards me," specifically 'as he barrelling', figure you forgot a 'was' in there. Excellent write Sunny, I can't wait to see the coming chapters. ![]() |
