Not strange tasting as they look.......

Jamun

COIMBATORE: It may not match the stature of the mango as the king of fruits. One may even shun it for the purple stain it leaves on the tongue. But, the naval fruit (also called jamun or Indian black berry) is turning out to be more expensive than the mango at Rs.35 for just 250 gm. Reason? It is touted as a fruit that can control diabetes.

Genip

"The mamoncillo (Melicoccus bijugatus), also known as the mamón (although the word is considered obscene in some Spanish speaking countries), chenet, guaya, gnep, ginep, skinnip (in Jamaica, St. Kitts) genip, guinep, ginnip, kenèp (in Haiti), quenepa (in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic), ackee (in Barbados), Spanish lime, or limoncillo, is a fruit-bearing tree in the soapberry family Sapindaceae..."

Otaheite Gooseberry

Totally unlike a gooseberry except for its acidity, the Otaheite gooseberry, Phyllanthus acidus Skeels (syns. P. distichus Muell. Arg.; Cicca acida Merr.; C. disticha L.), is another of the few members of the family Euphorbiaceae having edible fruit. It has been widely distributed and is variously known as Malay gooseberry or country gooseberry.

Star Apple

Chrysophyllum cainito is a tropical tree of the family Sapotaceae, native to the lowlands of Central America and the West Indies. It grows rapidly and reaches 20 m in height.

It has numerous common names including cainito, caimito, star apple, golden leaf tree, abiaba, pomme du lait, estrella, milk fruit and aguay. It is also known by the synonym Achras cainito. In Vietnam, it is called vú sữa (literally: milk fruit).

Golden Apple

Spondias mombin is a tree, a species of flowering plant in the family Anacardiaceae. It is native to the tropical Americas, including the West Indies. The tree has been naturalized in parts of Africa, India and Indonesia. It is rarely cultivated. The great fruit has a leathery skin and a thin layer of pulp. The pulp is either eaten fresh, or made into juice, concentrate, jellies , and sherbets. In Suriname's traditional medicine, the infusion of the leaves is used as a treatment of eye inflammation, diarrhea and venereal diseases. The seed has an oil content of 31.5%.

Rose Apple

Syzygium malaccense.. The name "Rose apple" may refer to any number of Syzygium fruits. The 2-4" fruits are red and bell-shaped. The flesh inside is white. There may be 1-2 seeds, or it may be seedless, depending on variety.

Cashew Fruit

The cashew (Anacardium occidentale; syn. Anacardium curatellifolium A.St.-Hil.) is a tree in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae. The plant is native to northeastern Brazil. Its English name derives from the Portuguese name for the fruit of the cashew tree, caju, which in turn derives from the indigenous Tupi name, acajú. It is now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew "nuts" The flesh has a rather bitter and acidic taste.....Very unpleasant.

Durian

The durian (pronounced /ˈdʊəriən/)[1] is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio and the Malvaceae family. The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive.

Chinese Okra

The luffas, also spelled loofah or loofa) are tropical and subtropical annual vines comprising the genus Luffa. The fruit of at least two species, L. acutangula and L. aegyptiaca, is grown to be harvested before maturity and eaten as a vegetable, sometimes called Chinese okra, popular in Asia and Africa.

Cassava

Cassava (Manihot esculenta), also called yuca or manioc, is a woody shrub of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge family) native to South America that is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrates. The flour made of the roots is called tapioca.

Jack Fruit

The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus or A. heterophylla[1]) is a species of tree in the mulberry family (Moraceae), which is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia. It is the national fruit of Bangladesh. The flesh (when ripe) can be very sickly sweet if too much is consumed.

Katahar

Breadnut (Katahar in Guyana, Chataigne in Trinidad and Tobago) is not to be confused with breadfruit or jackfruit. While all three belong to the Moraceae family, they are different in appearance and taste. The breadfruit is seedless and its flesh is starchy and used very much the way that a potato is used. Breadfruit can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes. Though the outer skin of a jackfruit and its interior resembles that of a katahar (breadnut), it grows much larger and can weigh anywhere from 10 to 80 pounds. Once cut opened, the fruit is said to smell like that of pineapple and banana.

Cashews

Malay apple, pommerac, wax apple, french cashew, not to be confused with the fruit that produces the nuts. This strain is the sweet version and the stone inside the fruit and is not edible.

Annato

Annatto, also called Achiote (ah-cho-tay) and Roucou, is a spice used for colouring and flavouring food. It is often referred to as “poor man’s saffron” because of the brilliant colour it imparts to foods, similar to saffron, and it’s inexpensive unlike saffron, the world’s most expensive spice. Annatto is widely used in regional Latin American and Indian cuisines, and in some Caribbean countries such as Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Kuru

Fruit from a palm similar to the date palm, it is only known to grow in the country of Guyana,South America.

Mangosteen

Following in the footsteps of Indian Alphonso mangoes, mangosteens have just become legal to import to the US from Puerto Rico. In the next few weeks, the fruit will be in season and for sale in New York, but at jaw-dropping prices ($10 each). Still, chowhounds are excited, and already speculating on whether the Southeast Asian fruit will become a trendy ingredient for chefs.

Eddoes

Eddoe is a tropical plant grown primarily as a vegetable food for its edible corm, and secondarily as a leaf vegetable. It is related to Taro (Dasheen), and to Tannia (Xanthosoma spp.), which are also used as vegetables, but has smaller corms and in all but the best cultivars there is an acrid taste that requires careful cooking.

Custard Apple

The custard-apple, also called bullock's heart or bull's heart, is the fruit of the tree Annona reticulata. This tree is a small deciduous or semi-evergreen tree sometimes reaching 10 metres (33 ft) tall and a native of the tropical New World that prefers low elevations, and a warm, humid climate. The leaves are pinnate, leathery, compound, 15–30 centimetres long, with 6–10 elliptical obovate-oblong leaflets. Each leaflet is 8–12 centimetres long and 5–8 centimetres broad.

Cinderella Fruit

In the rainforests of Peru's remote Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, mothers don't make kids eat their carrots. Instead, kids munch on aguaje (in Guyana it is known a Ite fruit which comes from the Ite Palm that is in abundance in our many water conservancies and wetlands), a crisp, neon yellow palm fruit covered in maroon scales. It tastes a bit like a carrot, but packs three times the Vitamin A punch.

Stinking toe.....Believe me, it stinks!

Despite the unappealing name, and an equally unappealing odor, many Virgin Islanders, especially children, have been known to enjoy the sweet taste of the stinking toe fruit. In El Salvador the stinking toe is actually sold in food markets, but is known by a more appetizing name, copinol.

The term stinking toe refers to the large seedpod of the West Indian Locust, Hymenaea courbaril, commonly called the stinking toe or old man's toe tree, one of the largest trees in the Caribbean. The seedpods look like big fat toes and the mealy pulp around the seeds, although foul smelling, is edible and good tasting.

Awarra

Awarra is one of the medium tall palms from the Amazon rainforest, growing up to 50 feet tall. This tree is common in the savannas and lowlands of Suriname.
The trunk is heavily spined and even the inflorescences are covered by a thorny spathe.
The orange-yellow fruit is very rich in vitamin A and about the size of a chicken egg.
The Awara fruits grow in bunches of about 11 feet long on the tree. The weight of a single bunch is about 100 pound.

Sour Sop

Also known as guanabana and kowosol is ovoid in shape, covered with short , soft spines dark green in colour, changing to a pale green when ripe. The pulp of the fruit is white, of a 'woolly' texture and pleasantly acidic. The juice is used to make a delightful ice cream or iced drink.

Bread Fruit

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry family, Moraceae, that is native to the Malay Peninsula and western Pacific islands. It has also been widely planted in tropical regions elsewhere.

The genus Tamarindus is monotypic (having only a single species). The tamarind is best described as sweet and sour in taste, and high in acid, sugar, vitamin B and interestingly for a fruit, calcium.

Thats cool, brings back some good memories. Ive eaten many of these fruits straight off the plant. Most were fabulous.

One similar to the Ite fruit, but it was so sour the locals called it crybabies...dont know the real name for it. It was great but had the most pucker factor of anything I have ever eaten.

It looked really good and I wanted to try it. I was worried about getting sick, though and was told to stay away from the fruit unless I could wash it myself.

Typically you can eat any fruit that can be peeled...as a general rule

Right, but I was told to wash it and peel it myself. We were usually off doing things or going to work and carrying fruit around for the day to take back to the hotel just didn't work well, unfortunately. Oh well. Perhaps next time.

It is safe to eat almost all tropical fruit if you peel them, even those that have skins that can be eaten, like the sharon fruit and cashews.

wow, as a vegetarian I must say that most of that looked really good. I love my fruits and vegies. Wish I had access to more of a variety than the grocery stores offers. It's expensive and for the most part not very fresh.
