Font Size:Default font sizeLarger font size. The Associated Students of Oregon State University are asking students if they want student fee dollars to be used to pay for the appearance Tristan Taormino, who was scheduled to speak at OSU’s upcoming Modern Sex conference.

Jan. 18, Taormino was uninvited to be the conference’s keynote speaker. University officials said conference planners could not use their allotted education and general fund dollars — taxpayer funds distributed through the Oregon legislature — to pay Taormino because of her background in pornography. The conference is scheduled for Feb. 14 to 16.

ASOSU president Andrew Struthers said he hopes at least 200 students respond to whether student fees could be used to pay for the appearance and travel expenses of the self-described “feminist pornographer.”

Taormino complained that the cancellation was short on notice and validity. She said her address to college audiences is about sexual empowerment and not as explicit as the content on her website, puckerup.com

Struthers said he’s spoken informally with student leaders and members of the general student population and so far has encountered no objections to paying Taormino using student fee dollars.

“Even the student leaders who’ve talked to students at-large have heard the same thing,” he said.

Struthers said it would cost approximately $4,000 to bring Taormino to campus, with $3,000 for her appearance fee and $1,000 for room and board.

OSU students pay $406.67 per term in student fees, meaning a student taking classes in fall, winter and spring terms pays $1,220.01. Students taking summer term classes pay an additional $296.08 in fees.

Students are invited to stop by ASOSU offices in Snell 149 or contact ASOSU Women’s Affairs Task Force director Sarah Hulse at wom

ens.affairs@oregonstate.edu or executive director of public relations Caity Cagle at asosu.pr@oregonstate.edu with comments.

so long as the events arent mandatory attendence, its an issue for the students and the school board,,,

Lagal age is so lacking. Today twins are 17 and we would shield them as a society tomm, orrow they turn 18 and alls ok.

Thats the way we define adulthood and mind assention. I am a parent to the day I die. But society is a definition of of a fine point. Today we protect you tommorrow we don't

I am glas to see which i did not post the comments to this in the paper from students at OSU.

Most have questioned her fee.

They are talking about why the heck does she need 1000 dollars for food and housing as her fee.. They want to know if she is eating Cavier on a Golden Plate. I agree her fee seems more important than her message.

Of course we are parents, but that has nothing to do with becoming adults or allowing our children to

and being an adult is being self responsible, which isnt dependent upon age but which does have a major correlation to culture and the responsibilities and expectations we base in age

my mom was socially an adult by 18, in terms of self sufficiency and responsibility, I know people in their twenties who still are not

but, with each child, at some point parents let go to some extent to allow them to become adults and stand on their own, college is that time for many 'children' such as my son who would make those decisions for himself,, and which the laws wouldnt require my approval for him to do so

which is why I clarify anyhow, that I wouldnt WANT her to, but that what I want would be secondary to what my legally adult student wanted (in terms of law for certain) in this case

I just think that our colleges are breeding grounds being harvested by people who are deginerative in nature. they guide and change children who just want to be accepted even though they may think things are wrong. Peer pressure is hard to overcome and adults are suppose to be nourishing thier ways and imaginations to expand the world to a better way of life. Not some book writing degenerate who cares most about a very good lifestyle. Teachers in HS's on the most part do it because they want to teach who we are and help a child open thier minds to see the big picture and they u can see have chosen a field with a college degree where they will make less money. Thats honorable. Those who seek to by the power of pervation to degrade. are not
