I never reply to any woman who doesn't have a photo up. For me, it's not a question of superficial vs. deep. I've got my photo up, because I'm willing to put myself out there in the Big Bad Dating World. I'm looking for an equal partner, and any woman who isn't also putting herself out there (by posting her photo) isn't going to be an equal partner for me.

On a related note, I always reply to any woman who has a photo up and who contacts me. Even if I'm not interested in her, I appreciate anyone who's willing to take the initiative. The best way to show my appreciation is to respond to anyone who takes a chance.
