God is a loving God. But also a God who hates sin. The Bible tells us in Rev. 21:8 "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and liers, they be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur"

You must learn first the attributes of God before u judge Him.
The people in old testament were punished because of their sins. They don't believe in God. And until now the Bible has warnings against those who don't believe.

And regarding to suffering, The Bible don't tell us that their is no suffering here on earth. Paul in the Bible are very faithful, but they suffered also, and they even gave their lives. All of these bad happenings are caused by sin. God created man perfectly but has a free will, because he don't want us to become like robot.But Adam and eve committed sin. They choose it. Just like you. You are free to believe, or not to believe. And the consequence of that is eternal punishment. Remember brother, even you will live for 100 years, compare to eternity.
