Identifying Scams

While using online dating sites & apps for the past 20 years, I've identified a number of indications of the intentions to drain one's money without any actual in-person relationship potential.
My intention here is to raise awareness for users of dating sites & apps to avoid being ripped off. The more we connect & share our knowledge, the stronger we will become. Some consignment indications of scamming I've noticed are: 1. Intense communication When someone we encounter has a pushy style of engaging & drives quick responses with further texting, such as, "Are you there?", "I'm looking forward to your response.", "Are you still interested?" 2. Wanting to quickly leave the dating site or app for an alternative messaging platform. While other messaging platforms are likened to a quiet, private space away from the party to talk alone, scammers use this tactic to avoid revealing to the dating site or app administrators of the ways in which they seek to defraud people out of their money with deceptive strategies aimed at preying on the emotional vulnerability of those seeking a romantic relationship. If this type of proposal to seek one's money were to take place within the messaging structure of the dating site or app, it could be reported or noticed by those running the site and the criminal's IP address could be restricted, ending the criminal's ability to operate there. When moving to an alternative messaging platform, be mindful of any questions related to money, finances, investments, cryptocurrency, banking, etc., which would indicate the individual on the other end is luring into request for money. Once money is delivered, nothing romantic will happen, but more requests for money will come over and over again. 3. Repetitious wording & Money Talk Those who seeks to empty your bank accounts may use common references to exactly the same people & places. One example I noticed on Mingle was several approaches espousing investments using cryptocurrency while having a relationship with the VP of Morgan Stanley as a relative, who would be instrumental in assisting with the investing. These Mingle profile users all wanted to "help" grow the amounts of funds in my investment portfolio by working directly with me to move my money around. After I rejected their requests to involve themselves into my financial matters, they either threw a fit laced with endless insults until I blocked them or simply stopped messaging me to spend their time with other defrauding interests elsewhere since I wasn't participating. Simply negate any financial discussions to filter out those whose only interests are your money. They will lie and misrepresent themselves as relationship interested, but once they speak of money or other financial interests, that's all they really ever wanted from the start. 4. Sponsoring Foreign Nationals While it may be attractive to consider bringing a foreign national into your home and your life, there are federal laws requiring sponsorship of these individuals from other countries entering the United States. in some cases the United States federal code requires many years of financial support for someone sponsored into an American citizen's home, regardless of whether or not that sponsored foreign national continues a relationship with the person who sponsored them originally or someone else altogether. there are many YouTube videos discussing this issue thoroughly and should be consulted prior to bringing someone into the United States and taking them into your home. It would be wise to research all of the immigration statutes before making arrangements to meet someone at an airport and drive them to your house. 5. Preying On Ignorance & The Focus On Emotions Criminals seeking to defraud and bilk you out of your hard-earned money are counting on the inability to discover surreptitious intentions to do so. Being More aware and informed of their methods, tactics, and strategies will give you a clear advantage when messaging off-site on an alternative messaging platform to easily discover when the funds in your bank account are being targeted in the conversation or when a foreign national who may be in this country illegally is seeking to associate with you to ultimately marry and get a Green Card. I've added a few situational descriptions here to start the conversation. I hope many of you will add your experiences here and as a group we can limit how many people lose their money to criminals or become involved in relationships that have selfish intentions written all over them. Stay Frosty!! |
