Besides buying the expensive food, what else can I do to help prevent hairballs?

My cat gets hairballs all the time. I can't afford to get the special cat food, which I don't even know if it works or not.

I've tried putting butter on his paws when he gets them, seemed to help sometimes, but not always, besides, I'm not sure butter is good for him or not.

I very rarely let him eat a bite or two of human food. I have him on a strict cat food only diet.

What are somethings I can do to help prevent the hairballs?

give him that stuff in the white tube for cats...it really helps but i cant remember the name

You could try brushing him on a regular basis.

i have an adorable 4pound box trained dog that needs a new home . . . he doesnt get hairballs . . . .

If I had a yard, I'd have a dog.

I do try, but it's hard to brush him, he doesn't like it too much.

The expensive cat food thats supposed to stop hair balls hasn't worked for my cat . We bought a glove that you wear to brush her with that takes off all the loose hair and it has helped alot .

Thanks, I'll try that glove, because the comb thing doesn't work out very well, but he does like being petted, so maybe the glove will work.

i dont know, my cat has never gotten them, then again he's on some speical cat food, from dad's and it doesnt cost anymore than the regualar catfood

I don't remember but we picked it up at WalMart ... my cat is really skittish and doesn't like brushes but she will let you pet her so it works well .

This is the first cat I've had that's had hairballs. Only the second male cat I've had, the first male was an outdoors cat, so he may have gotten hairballs, but I don't know.

My cat has been on this food for his whole life(well senice he switched from kitten food to cat food) its suppost to help keep his insides clear, the vet put him on it, said it was best for male cats

Pet training to prevent hairballs? I don't see that working. I know a woman that gives her cat vaseline to eat when he has one. Some cats are more prone to it than others. The mitt brush mentioned is pretty good for cats that don't like to be brushed. I've known people who have had great luck with it. But brushing doesn't always help. Some of the less expensive cat food brands do have hairball formulas. You don't always need the expensive brands.
