I'm trying to quit for the umpteenth time. Been smoking since I was 12,
but didnt smoke when I was prego....quit 2 more times for 9 mo and the
2nd time for 2 years.

I've done it cold turkey, but was sick all three times. Used patches,
gum, and this time I'm trying to just cut down and only wear the patch
at night since I have insomnia and get bored. I didnt smoke at all last
night and have cut way way back from one pack a day to 1/2 to 1/3 a day.

Any suggestions? I really want it to work this time and not be chewing
instead. (food, gum, toothpicks, hard candy etc.) I like my veggies so
thats what ive been doing this time.

I admire your conviction. Stick with it. I quit 6 months ago . . .
cold turkey. You have to be in the proper frame of mind to want to
force yourself to quit knowing that it will be hard. When I woke up on
my 52nd birthday, I knew that was the day and I haven't had one since.
Carrots, celery and grapes took the place of the cigs and help me from
gaining weight.

You can do it . . . I know you can.

Cold Turkey is best..... Quit once for a year (only been smoking again
since 6/06), but as I was dealing with a divorce, the stress overtook my
desire to be smokefree and lost the battle. It is truly all in the head.
Good Luck and Best Wishes. I hope to quit soon myself.

Quitting ain't easy.
I always tell myself I'll quit when there's no stress in my life.
But, the truth is, there will always be stress in my life whether I like
it or not. So, that really isn't a good excuse.
So, I continue to regretfully smoke as I feel my lungs get weaker.
Every night when I go to bed, I tell myself tomorrow's gonna be the
day. It won't be too hard. I can do it. No prob.
Yeah, right!laugh
Here I am 13 years later telling myself the same ol' thing.

yeh kev its very very hard..they say cigeratte smoke is more addicting
than cocaine..thats y when i decide to quit, i might have to get help,
dont know if i could do it on my own..but then again, who knows..its a
very sickening habit and it does kill.

All I can say it is like anythig else in life it is something that you
must really want to do deep inside or it will never happen. Yes I'm an
ex smoker quit 4 years ago and each time I did quit it was cold turkey
my self I used straws to chew on and to help with that motion of having
something in your hand and putting it in your mouth for that motion is
what we miss the most sometimes and also staying busy when the urge hit.
But ... for me I had a good reason my grandbaby was born with a
breathing problem and was coming home to live with me at the time for
they were staying with me. I stopped all from smoking inn the house
before she came home I knew I would not go outside and smoke so my only
choice was to quit I have not regretted it one day. It is not easy but
wit will power you can do it when you think about one think of the
reason you want to quit and find something to do till it passes. Good
luck you can do it!!!!flowerforyou

Wow, thank you for all the advise. I'm trying to keep my head up. Did a
report once in college about the addictive nature of nicotine. Found in
my searches that nicotine is only one molocule difference than cocaine,
so I know it will be very hard. Thanks again and I will take the advise!
You all are great and supportive! Going to a movie today with my son. It
will be a challege to see what I do in the middle of the movie or
actually what I will want to do since I will not be taking any ciggs
with me. Maybe I should find a tooth pick, LOL

Thank again!

I've heard some people that working out helps cut the edge off. It will
be rough in the beginning because of what the smoking has done to your
lungs but in the long run it will be much better! I was never a smoker
but I wish you the very best! You CAN DO anything you set your mind to
do. One of these times you WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!

Very true.
Working out is a sure-fire way to keep your mind off of it. It's when
your done working out when the smoke is the best. Kinda like sex.
Major drawback.
Movies are one of the hardest times not to have a smoke. Especially
when someone is smoking on the screen. Ugh.
Good luck.ohwell

But if you drink a lot of water after you work out you begin to flush
your system out a bit. There really isn't an easy way to quit. If you
can make it through the miserable phase it does get easier I hear.

LOL, yeah. I hear it only takes 72 hours to get the nicotine out of your
system and the rest is in your head, BUT I can't go cold turkey. I have
my reasons. I quit for two years once and I felt so much better about it
and my life.....Thanks again for the support!

I was able to quit smoking after 30 yrs. The way that I did it was using
the patch, but I did it as a birthday present for someone else. And now
that has been 9+ years ago now.

Some people find Wellbutrin helpful, it is an antidepressant but it has
some quality that is helpful with people wanting to quit smoking. And
there is a new drug on the market called "Chantix" that is for stopping
smoking. It is new enough that I haven't heard how it works yet. Also
have heard there are now nicotine lollipops (like the gum) and flavored
gum now too.

I think it is excellent that you are quitting, you will be so much
healthier for it. I would guess keeping busy so that you keep your mind
thinking about other things is also helpful.

I have never smoked, but have other issues I am working on.

Congratulations on stopping smoking Fire, and everyone here who has done
it too. I have talked to people who have told me how hard it is, and
really admire you for quitting.
