Topic: Raped twice!

I've taken some of this from an admittedly anti-Bush/anti-McCain site.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/9/17/175430/636/888/601186

Still, if it is true that Palin charged rape victims for their rape-kits rather than comply with laws that required victims of rape be given information on abortion or morning after options after being raped well...shame on her!

If you mother, sister or daughter was raped would you ask she pay to produce evidence or to defend herself? Would you deny her information about legal medical procedures? Would you insist she carry the child of her rapist? Sarah Palin would.

Mind you, the evidence here is circumstantial, but there's really no other logical alternative, and the conclusion is damning.

From the article at the site above.

"I suppose that when most of us who are fortunate not to have been the victim of sexual assault hear the word "rape kit", we tend to think of it specifically in terms of forensic analysis and examination--DNA collection, trauma, that whole sort of thing.

But rape kits also contain...emergency contraception.

To quote from an Alaska blogger who has provided a firsthand account of the aftermath of a sexual assault in Wasilla:

I sat with a rape victim during the "harvesting of evidence". Mascara smeared eyes stared blankly out from a cave of shame. "We've got swimmers," announced the forensic tech in the lab next door. My friend didn't look surprised. In her 60's, she was still asked if she felt the need for emergency contraception. Surviving the process would have only been compounded and made worse with an itemized bill; victimized twice courtesy of Sarah Palin and the city of Wasilla.

The rape kits that Sarah Palin had a direct role in forcing women to pay for contained emergency contraception.

Back in 2000, Governor Knowles of Alaska signed a bill that required cities in Alaska to pay for rape kits for victims--primarily owing to outrage over Wasilla's practices.

I have read about this and found it to be very disturbing to say the least. There should be an outrage over this happening to rape victims.

I have read, too, that Alaska has among the higher incidences of rape per capita of any state in the USA.

We all know that Palin is anti-abortion. But...come on...even in the cases of rape and incest. For crying out loud.

If this were true, this would be a big campaign dig by the Democrats. It would make at least CNN, for sure. It didn't.

More mud-slinging by the Republicrats. It gets so tired for us who are sick of both parties to see the constant, never-ending, false accusation drivel.

Check out Palin's position. Please!

She is radically pro-life.

A personal note: I was contacted by a poster from this forum who told me the only reason abortion was necessary was because some women were too stupid to take birth control.

Again...life is not that easy is it?

This is one of several articles pertaining to Lyann's topic.

"Of all of the things I've learned about Sarah Palin in the last week and a half, this has got to be the most disturbing. While Sarah Palin was serving as the Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, the city charged victims of sexual assault between $300 and $1200 for their own rape kits. A rape kit is a sexual assault forensic evidence kit, used to collect DNA that can be used in criminal proceedings to assist in the conviction of those who commit sex crimes. The kit is performed as soon as possible after a sexual assault or attack has been committed. It is usually humiliating and uncomfortable for the victim-imagine enduring that and then paying $1200 just so that the criminal who assaulted you might be caught.

Taken from the Frontiersman… Please note that the Governor who signed the new law preventing sexual assault victims from paying for their own rape kits was a Democrat, Tony Knowles.

'Knowles signs sexual assault bill

ANCHORAGE - Gov. Tony Knowles recently signed legislation protecting victims of sexual assault from being billed for tests to collect evidence of the crime, but one local police chief said the new law will further burden taxpayers.

The governor signed House Bill 270, sponsored by Rep. Eric Croft, D-Anchorage, outside the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) exam room at Alaska Regional Hospital. In attendance at the signing were members of victims advocate groups, law enforcement agencies and legislators.

The new law makes it illegal for any law enforcement agency to bill victims or victims insurance companies for the costs of examinations that take place to collect evidence of a sexual assault or determine if a sexual assault did occur.

We would never bill the victim of a burglary for fingerprinting and photographing the crime scene, or for the cost of gathering other evidence, Knowles said. Nor should we bill rape victims just because the crime scene happens to be their bodies.

While the Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies have covered the cost of exams, which cost between $300 to $1,200 apiece, the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests.

Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon does not agree with the new legislation, saying the law will require the city and communities to come up with more funds to cover the costs of the forensic exams.

In the past we've charged the cost of exams to the victims insurance company when possible. I just dont want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer, Fannon said.

According to Fannon, the new law will cost the Wasilla Police Department approximately $5,000 to $14,000 a year to collect evidence for sexual assault cases.

Ultimately it is the criminal who should bear the burden of the added costs, Fannon said.

The forensic exam is just one part of the equation. Id like to see the courts make these people pay restitution for these things, Fannon said.

Fannon said he intends to include the cost of exams required to collect evidence in a restitution request as a part of a criminals sentencing.

Palmer police chief Laren Zager said that to his knowledge, no sexual assault victim has ever been billed by the city of Palmer for an exam to collect evidence of a crime. Zager, who has been police chief since January, said he would never expect a victim to be burdened with the cost of a police investigation.

Im prepared to pay every dime in an investigation. As long as I am chief, I would never bill a victim, Zager said.

The new bill would also make law enforcement agencies that are investigating a sexual assault responsible for the costs of testing victims for sexually transmitted diseases and emergency contraception."

Interesting. Thanks, Winx. I wonder why this didn't make the national nightly new. If it did, I missed it.

I think I posted something about this too. I wonder why this sort of thing doesn't make the news, but lipstick on a pig, promiscuous teenagers (teenage sex, never heard of such a thing) and lapel pins are issues, but this isn't.

The email that you received shows soooo much ignorance that it is difficult for me to even comprehend that someone could even suggest such a thing. There are so many rape victims and incest victims and people are talking about abortion as birth control. WTF?
