MCCAIN SUSPENDS CAMPAIGN TO FOCUS ON ECONOMY; WANTS DEBATE DELAY
Wed Sept 24 2008 14:58:02 ET

MCCAIN: America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward.I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration' proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.
I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

From Yahoo Page:

The Obama campaign said in a statement that Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain's statement was issued to the media a few minutes later.

 I think this a campaign tactic. If McCain/Palin campaign can avoid the media and being pinned down on questions and positions then they win. They are trying to avoid Obama campaign from landing a "knockout punch" on them. It makes a lot of sense. Plus lets be honest, Obama has the advantage in the one-on-one debates just by virtue of his natural charisma. Im not meaning that in a partisan sense either. Just trying to state the obvious.flowerforyou

I believe it was reported on Fox news when the story broke that Obama called McCain and 8:30 to suggest the a joint statement in support of the bailout package..Sorry I was watching it..So McCain's decides to grandstand all in the name of the American people..Now I watched it on Fox and all the other news channels are saying the same thing...Is McCain to old to multitask...Wouldn't want he falling asleep with his finger on the button now would we?????

 Presidential elections are important. We dont just cancel them at the drop of a hat. The debates are also important. Also McCain had no problem meeting his other comitments this week. They could have the debate as it was scheduled for months and then fly to DC if necessary. Its a (brilliant) campaign tactic on McCain campaigns part.

It's so typical of DEMS to assume some insidious meaning to what McCain is doing. He is suspending the debate to return to Washington... putting Americans first over politics.

The OBAMA arguments are nothing more than putting his partisan campaign before the good of Americans. to even argue this shows such a lack of care & concern...keep licking your chops OBAMA.

It just goes to show you don't send a boy in to do a job made for a man.

All DEMS care about are their own political necks...and you want me to believe you have anyone's best interests at heart? LOL

BTW...they won't be cancelled just delayed.

OMT...with the media partisan bias attacks against McCain/Palin, it's not wonder why they don't give interviews. They have to get PASSED the media to get out their message...so trying to talk TO them (the media) would be a waste of time.

It was Obama's idea that McCain agreed to and Obama gets blasted for it by you but McCain is put on a pedestal? You are SO biased it's crazy. Do you even read what you type. How ridiculous it sounds?

Uh...so then why is OBAMA insisting on the debates instead of doing something good for Americans? All he did was take swipes at McCain for putting the country before his election campaign. OBAMA attacked McCain for it...along with his partisan media pals. Disgusting.

I have news for OBAMA...everyone else KNOWS there's enough blame to go around...including himself.

This maneuver was nothing more than a POLITICAL PLOY.

You bought it as did many other gullible people.

"Putting America first before politics." What a JOKE!

Maybe we should just do away with the elections this year and keep BUSH!

After all, we are at WAR!
