I missed this last night. Here's a little summary of his appearance. Remember, McCain actually announced his presidential run on Letterman.
McCain Makes Amends for Blowing Off Letterman Laura Meckler reports from New York City on the presidential race: Sen. John McCain made amends for blowing off David Letterman last month. And, as the late-night TV interview grew serious, he defended the selection of his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her statement that Democrat Barack Obama “pals around with terrorists.” The interview, taped late this afternoon, is to be broadcast tonight. Sen. McCain also suggested that Gov. Palin would soon be on a late-night show of her own soon — “Saturday Night Live,” which has made relentless fun of her. “Probably get more of an audience than our debate did,” Sen. McCain predicted. Upon arrival to the “Late Show with David Letterman” set, Sen. McCain joked that he had asked his son now serving in the Marine Corps to FedEx his flak jacket in preparation for the show. “So what happened?” Mr. Letterman asked, referencing his decision to “suspend” his campaign to return to Washington to help fix the financial crisis. He skipped the Letterman taping though he didn’t leave New York until the next day. Mr. McCain answered: “I screwed up.” But he noted that Mr. Letterman has riffed on it ever since. “Look at all the conversation I gave you.” Mr. Letterman offered, “I’m willing to put this behind us.” Mr. McCain replied by observing, “there’s going to be a kind of sad feeling around here when the election takes place.” The host asked Sen. McCain about Wednesday’s debate, and before long, Joe the plumber was brought up. “Joe, if you’re watching, I’m sorry,” Sen. McCain said, referring to the press attention that the Ohio man had received. Sen. McCain said he hasn’t spoken to Joe yet. Mr. Letterman also raised Sen. McCain’s relationship with one-time Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy. “I’ve met him,” Sen. McCain said. After a segment break, he followed up: “I know Gordon Liddy. He paid his debt, he went to prison, he paid his debt.” Democrats immediately circulated information documenting the relationship between the two men, including a Liddy-hosted McCain fund-raiser in 1998. Sen. McCain was also asked about his running mate and whether she was his first choice for the job. Sen. McCain said “absolutely” she was. But he confessed, “I didn’t know her well at all. I knew her reputation.” Still, Mr. Letterman pressed Sen. McCain as to whether she is really ready to be president if need be. Would she be “the woman to lead us through the next 9/11 attack?” he asked. “Absolutely” she is, Sen. McCain said. “She has inspired Americans. That’s the thing we need.” The host also asked whether Gov. Palin had said that Sen. Obama “pals around with terrorists.” McCain started to say he didn’t know, then said “Yes. And he did.” |
