My clan site uses PHP Platinum. The forums are pretty simple to admin, create, etc..

Yeah, but Vanilla mods are way easier to install. IDK, I guess it's just a matter of prefrence.

I never used Vanilla so I dont know, I just know with my limited computer skills I can run PHPBB just finewith a little help from an IP address checker. (you will need to kick out trouble makers)

I do like that CAPTCHA is automatically integrated into PHPBB.

As an admin you will find this handy, add it to your favorites and when you need to moderate your forum you will have a good tool. http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/lookup-results

I like this because it runs a proxy check I pretty much wont admit anyone with a proxy and ususaly just ban them right off the batdevil

Why?

Why?
I just dont trust people who run proxies. You could wake up one moring and find your site has been spammed or whatever and not be able to trace it back.

when you set your forum up make sure you do not allow automatic registering. review all requests to join and make them sign in useing an email address. It helps with the spammers and scammers. but if it is a closed forum to only people you know then it wont be a problemb.

I have always liked phpbb, its free and easy to modify. I really don't see what vBulletin offers that I can't achieve with phpbb for none of the cost.
Demo : free forums

I'm using MKPortal+SMF. It's perfect for me at this time.

Make sure you Backup atleast once a week on the Databases.
And hope your not using SMF RC2.
Supposely not stable enough yet to use online.
