I am lucky to have never had any major depression. If I start feeling down, I turn on some good music or something and it lifts me right up. I'm always positive in that I can make what ever is depressing me get better.

As someone diagnosed decades ago with Bipolar II disorder, yes. I refuse to surrender to it. When I recognize that I am depressed, I take contrary action, which means if I don't feel like doing anything, that means I must, regardless of how I feel. Eventually, the mood passes as I begin to accomplish something. I couldn't help but notice that your photo appeared to be in bed. Perhaps it's time to get out of it. Give yourself a kick start, and from the first thing you would do if you weren't depressed, insist on doing it. If you can't, then you need to seek professional help. As for the flip side of my illness, I try to have as much fun with it as possible. Prayer helps too, but remember that if god can see the true character of a person, I'm assuming he can see through hats too so I wouldn't worry about removing it. happy

I had a breakdown( depression) when I was 23 and 2 mo pregnant with my 4th child.. Hospitalized for 12 days and had 7 electroshock treatments.. I hope never to go thur that again and I am smart enough to know that if depression hits, I need to get to the dr.. My breakdown was 43 yrs ago and have only had 2 other times when I felt I needed to go on meds for a short time, the last was last yr when I lost both my husband and my mother within 6 mo.... I used to talk to kids at the local high school who suffered from depression..sometimes all they needed was to know that someone had been there, done that.. please do not critize people that suffer from depression.. Its not something they want or ask for.. Most times it is a chemical imbalance and can be treated..flowerforyou

Usually when someone brings up depression, they're usually a sufferer of it. As you're not, perhaps I've also added a tool to your toolbox in your profession. I'd have expected better out of someone in your profession, and it really doesn't matter that you're not kidding.

In short, yes.

It comes and goes. Lately it does the former far more frequently than the latter. I just try to remind myself that it will end and I will feel like living again.

I could be worse off.

I suffer from bouts of depression from time to time. It gets rather serious sometimes as well. It doesn't take much to trigger it, either... from problems with work and income, to stresses at home or with relationships.

Someone called depression "anger with no attainable resolution". For all I know, he's probably right.

He was being encouraging to you thinking that you were the one depressed. He also opened up to you about his problems and how he dealt with them.

He was not talking negatively to you. Sooo...why did you have to put him down?

Your comment doesn't sound very much like a counselor's to me.

'Tis true. However, easier said than done. The lethargy that often rides piggyback on depression, at its worst, makes it virtually impossible to do anything worthwhile.

For many of us, there's not a lot to do about it. The depression will continue to return periodically our whole lives.

So it's not about "feeling sorry for ourselves."

i have problems with depression, you cant let it control you, or you might as well give up, if you cant control it on your own u need to get to the docter and get some meds, ive been on and off medication and it works wonders

I wouldn't say it controls me. It hits bad from time to time, sometimes more or less frequently than other times. I control it by thinking positively, taking my mind off things, reminding myself that others suffer worse than I do. Eventually it passes and I return to my regular state.

I don't know, this may sound peculiar to you, it may sound like I put myself through a lot of hell in this way. I'm just desribing to you my way of dealing with it. I do this because I don't trust medication, never have, and I think society's answer to everything is to prescribe, prescribe, prescribe, just my opinion.
