Oooooh looseing power when you have kids is scarey. I don't like the dark so much either.

Might make you think about getting some emergency back up plans.

What would you do if you couldn't get power back for several days? If you have no running water or toilet? If pipes freeze with water in them you will have bursted pipes; do you know where shut off and drain valves are? Do you have a way to produce heat with out suffocateing yourself with carbon monoxide? After a relatively short time the cell phone will die. Do you know where you could go for assistance?

When you know the answers to some of these questions the fear is reduced.

my entire county lost power for about 4 hours!!!

and its snowey.. cold..

but now its better!!! wondderous!
glorious!!
beautiful!!
POWER!!!!!

Our town lost power last year for a few hours. The frightening thing for me was that within 15 minutes you could not buy a loaf of bread.

No prices, no computers, no lights, no banking, etc.

The entire community shuts down and can't function.

What if we lost power for two weeks? What is the back up plan?

This could happen if the grid went down. The grid can go down in a New York minute all over the country with one well placed solar flare.

All communications, and Internet could be wiped out, even wireless if certain satellites were hit by a solar flare or rock from space.

We would be more helpless than people 200 years ago.

People today don't know how to cook let alone grow their own food.

It could happen very easy.

That's scary.

worst part of it is that my heat is electric..
so no power equals no heat.. and the 4 kids were getting a bit nervous..
we are all camped out in the living room with a pile of blankets on us..

That's why my apartment has a fire place. Just gotta find a female to spend some time with and then shoot the transformer box so it makes it that much more romantic. =)

my parents house is a quarter mile away. i know how to shut off my water and under normal circumstances my heat in my house is an oil furnace. and the heat in my parents house is a fireplace. the cell phones dont work around here anyway. we live in a valley with no towers, so i have a land line, a land line with a non cordless phone.
i am pretty self suficent, but last night was wierd cuz 2 of my kids were suposed to be spending the nite with friends. but the parents brought them back and i ran out of oil for the furnace a few days ago, and havnet had the $$ to get more yet.
as the power comapny gave us a estimated time that was reasonable i decided to keep the kids and i here and not bother my parents (who also didnt have power)

where i live the store is only open 5 days a week and only from 8 am to 6 pm..
so we learn to keep stocked up on things like bread, milk, and essentials.. as we dont have ready access to them any way.
