FORT MYERS, Fla. – A woman's hard-luck tale at a town hall meeting in Florida moved President Barack Obama to leave the stage.

When Henrietta Hughes complained she'd been down on her luck and was living in her car with her son, Obama walked to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Hughes said she was out of work and homeless, with "a very small vehicle for my family and I to live in."

A White House press secretary said administration officials asked the local housing authority to contact her after the exchange in Fort Myers.

Meanwhile, the wife of Florida state Rep. Nick Thompson offered to let the woman stay in a house she owns that's vacant about 30 miles away. Chene Thompson isn't sure if Hughes will take her up on the offer.

Henrietta Hughes
February 10th, 2009

At President Obama’s town hall meeting in Ft. Myers, Fla., today, one questioner stood out. Henrietta Hughes took the microphone and in a wavering voice, asked the president for help.

“I have an urgent need, unemployment and homelessness, a very small vehicle for my family and I to live in,” she said. “The housing authority has two years’ waiting lists, and we need something more than the vehicle and the parks to go to. We need our own kitchen and our own bathroom. Please help.”

President Obama gave her a kiss on the cheek, telling her, “We’re going to do everything we can to help you, but there are a lot of people like you.” He said his staff would meet with her after the town hall.

Hughes says she and her adult son have been homeless for “a long time.” She says her son lost his job in computer programming, and they in turn lost their house. She says she has been looking for a job, although she is on disability for cancer, but so far has not been able to find work.

Hughes was visibly moved by the president. “I’m just grateful to have him to acknowledge and for him to hear me,” she said. She would not give specifics about the type of help White House has promised her, only saying she was “satisfied.”

Hughes says she was not able to vote on election day because she does not have an address. She said without a vote, she prayed that Mr. Obama would win. “I said, ‘Lord please have mercy on Mr. Obama.” and the Lord did so.’”

After the president left, reporters crowded around Hughes, doing one interview after another. People in the crowd handed her business cards and cash. Florida Rep. Nick Thompson has offered her and her son a home in La Belle, a town about two hours from Ft. Myers.

She's been looking for work. Not that she hasn't tried apparently.

Seems like no fixed address would make it difficult to get a job too.

I have one issue.

How does a homeless woman travel to the conference (from my understanding, it's not where she lived though I may be wrong) and then manage to get a ticket in and on top of that, sit in the front row to ask a question?

well two issues: I've heard nothing more about her other than her hardship. When Joe the Plumber came up, we knew everything about him in 48 hours and it was all over the media. Where is the investigation here?

He did not need one single woman to move him, he was already moved to action for this country a long time ago.

This is not true at all. Obama called for all of his supporters to do all they can even if it is just volunteer work to help this nation be all it can be and I have seen the motivation in Americans of all races, backgrounds and economic standings.

There is nothing wrong with understanding that all people have down points in their lives and need help and those same people who needed will be there for the next people who need.

It is a great thing and only those blinded by their own personal hatred cannot see it.

All you have shown here is your own hatred and ignorance, you made no point of any value at all. My opinion of course.

I guess that could be because Joe passed himself off as something he was not, he would not admit to his prejudice as his basis for his ideals, etc....

Joe was a joke from day one and still is. The only people who can understand his standing are those with prejudice in their hearts. My opinion of course.

I voted for Obama. My parents and sibling and friends voted for Obama. We're not like that. We own homes. My mother retired at 70 yrs. old.

It wasn't for the womans sake.
It was for his glory.
Trying to show his followers he is their savior-in-chief.

Not true at all, he is being an example of what Americans should be.

There are people all over this country that go out of their way to help those less fortunate and they don't require the attention your savior does.
The deed that you don't tell anyone about is the one that counts, in Gods eyes.

That's because he's the President. Of course, he gets more attention.

Just because the woman asked him in a public forum does not imply he is an attention whore at any level. Everything Obama does from now all will be televised and reported. So basically what you are saying is that he should be private and secretive, like Bush, which will bring him more problems.

No Obama is going to pay attention to those who address him and he will try to do the best he can do. Just like he told her, he will not be able to do anything right away but he understands and will keep her plight and hundreds of thousands others at heart.

This is not even a valid complaint, really, just think about it.

Racism, bigotry, cynicism and heartless judging of others are sicknesses of the soul.

When one doesn't keep those ravaging sentiments in check, there comes a time when one looses all touch with one's own humanity.

When that happens to a country, it implodes!!!
